The Bible does not mean what it says

Scripture says " Delight in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart."

Like so many other verses in the Bible, "he will give you the desires of your heart" does not mean " he will give you the desires of your heart."

Sort of like "ask anything of the father in my name and it will be given to you" doesn't mean what it says.

So many other places in the Bible, it doesn't mean what it says. Since the Bible is so famous for not meaning what it says, how do you know which verses to trust or what they mean.?

Twilight Hue

Twilight, not bright nor dark, good nor bad.
It's a book of ancient mythology, so of course it won't mean anything in any practical real sense.

It's a bit naive to think otherwise.

The scriptures do mean what they say. A person who truly delights in the Lord first and foremost trusts God and desires things or asks for things with a heart and attitude which always wants God's will and wisdom in regard to their desires or requests.

I pray all the time that God would guide me and have me do his will. He doesn't do it. I even pray that he would govern my desire so that I only desire his will and only ask for what he wants me to ask for. He doesn't even grant that Grace.

There was a dream i had not too long ago. This dream was VERY vivid. So, i considered it important. But, this dream tought me a insight into that verse about God granting the desires of the heart.

Ok, i dreamed i was in a meadow field, wide and spacious. Trees all around. There was this man standing nearby. He was about 9 feet tall. I could not see his face. But, it was revealed that he was my gaurdian. Anyway.....he said "this place is alotted to you because your greatest desire is for freedom and so God has granted that desire."

I replied "umm, ok....well, what do i do?"

He said "you have eternity to think about that. In this place all you have is time on your hands."

I said "ok...is there anything to eat?"

He says "sure, but when you eat it, once swallowed it disapears, for you dont need it to maintain your life here. And whatever you pick off, regenerates swiftly. "

Thats the end of the dream.

Basically this is my takeaway from the dream. Its literally true my greatest desire is for freedom. For some people its a want, for me its so intense that its a need.

Anyway, ever see a jinny show? The jinny says "be careful what you wish for, you just might get it".

It means that whatever you desire, comes with responsibilities and or consequences.

My example for freedom. Basically the gaurdian was saying if you want TOTAL perfect freedom, then youl be in the wild, left to think through everything to gain all knowledge for yourself.

Be careful what you desire, because yes, God will grant your desire, but, make sure you really want him too.

The scriptures state that God does not respond to the prayers of unrepentant sinners who continue in rejection, rebellion, and lack of faith (John 9:31; Isaiah 59:2; Psalm 66:18). The only prayer God answers of unbelievers is the prayer of repentance and/ or calling to Jesus for salvation. God has already called you to repent and believe, yet you continue to mock God, His word and worship idols.

I don't worship Idols and everyone is a sinner. I Repent all the time.

Suppose a Beloved will tell the Lover, if you truely love me, whatever you ask I will give you.
Would the lover who truely loves the beloved ask for anything except to be with the beloved and to please the beloved? Would a true lover asks the beloved to give him another beautiful thing? Or a worldly thing?

Perhaps the point of these verses is to get us to ask ourselves this question. To get is to look for the 'truth of God' in our own experience and understanding of reality. That is, after all, how the people who wrote these texts used them. It's why they called their God "the living God": because they had to live with it, and grapple with the mystery of it.

PopeADope,
Allow me Please, to ask you a question. Do you understand that there are only three fields of knowledge, know as Learned Professions, Medicine, Law, and Religion? Each of these professions takes many years to versed in, that is any of these fields. By reading your posts, it is very easy for a person versed in the Religious field, to recognize that you are not versed in the Religious field, but at best have only a Nodding Acquaintence with Religion. Don’t you realize that you are, a Superficialist in Religion, and should NOT be making statements that make it easy for anyone that has any understanding of the Holy Scriptures, to recognize immediately that you do not really want to understand God’s Word, but just want to make silly statements, as if no one understands God’s Word. If you would just ask any sensible question about The Bible, I can would be very pleased to help you understand what the message is, from our Creator and God, Who holds every life in His Hand, Acts 17:24-28. Agape!!!

The Bible also says the Earth is flat. You have to allow it a little poetic license.

Axe Elf,
Begging your pardon, will you please point out to me, just ONE place in the Holy Scriptures that states that the earth is flat. It is true that the Bible speaks about the four corners of the earth, but, today, we know that the earth is circular, but we still use that term.
The fact is, in the time period that the Bible was written in, no person on earth knew what shape the earth is, but The Almighty God Who Created it did, and He had the shape recorded in His Word, Isaiah 40:22, Job 26:10- in many Literal Bibles. Agape!!!

How do you know you have the correct interpretation of the Bible?

I wouldn't worry about it. It first says "delight in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart. There's a stipulation, a condition, a requirement that is demanded as part of the deal. Delight in the Lord. Jesus said IF you love me you will keep my commandments.

I must be missing it too because i prayed for my cat but she died anyway. So i wouldn't worry about it. Maybe the Lord will save her for me and give her back to me in the 8th millennium when the earth is made new. Jesus also said that if our faith was the size of a mustard seed we could move a mountain. So then the fault is with my faith, not with the power of the Creator.

So many other places in the Bible, it doesn't mean what it says. Since the Bible is so famous for not meaning what it says, how do you know which verses to trust or what they mean.?

You can trust ALL the verses, you just can't trust our understanding of what they mean.

Remember when Jesus sent out the 72. Jesus Himself gave them the power to heal and to cast out demons. But it didn't work with everyone. Some of those disciples came back unable to cast out the demons.

"And I brought him to thy disciples, and they could not cure him. Then Jesus answered and said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him hither to me. And Jesus rebuked the devil; and he departed out of him: and the child was cured from that very hour.
And there were other times like when the woman just touched Jesus' garment and was healed. Jesus said it was your FAITH that healed you.

"Then the woman, seeing that she could not go unnoticed, came trembling and fell at his feet. In the presence of all the people, she told why she had touched him and how she had been instantly healed. Then he said to her, "Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace."

If it was a snake, it would have bit you--you cited the verse yourself.

"He sits enthroned above the circle of the Earth..." --Isaiah 40:22a

A circle, as we all know, is a flat, two-dimensional object.

The "four corners" thing would contradict this verse, and only serves to support my original point--that you have to allow for some poetic license when interpreting the Bible. Like you said, we still use the "four corners" figure of speech today, but the poetic license is understood.

And if you want to argue that God mistakenly used the Hebrew word for "circle" when He meant to use the Hebrew word for "ball," then that also serves to support my original point--that you have to allow for some poetic license when interpreting the Bible.
