'KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — One of the founders of the Taliban and the chief enforcer of its harsh interpretation of Islamic law when they last ruled Afghanistan said the hard-line movement will once again carry out executions and amputations of hands, though perhaps not in public.

In an interview with The Associated Press, Mullah Nooruddin Turabi dismissed outrage over the Taliban’s executions in the past, which sometimes took place in front of crowds at a stadium, and he warned the world against interfering with Afghanistan’s new rulers.

“Everyone criticized us for the punishments in the stadium, but we have never said anything about their laws and their punishments,” Turabi told The Associated Press, speaking in Kabul. “No one will tell us what our laws should be. We will follow Islam and we will make our laws on the Quran.”'

From the article it seems that aside from being intent on killing, this Taliban leader is also intent on maiming the poor and mentally vulnerable who commit theft instead of committing them to the appropriate institutions for care.

And who stands to benefit from all this? From the article it seems it is certain wealthy shopkeepers who would rather see the poor maimed than ask the kind of hard questions about how other countries are able to keep their shops open 24hrs without maiming the poor.

In my opinion.

Yes, the Taliban have barbaric punishments.
But imprisonment is pretty harsh too.
Their system isn't something we need to do anything about.

Which is why we don't want Christian fundamentalists in charge here. Women's rights go straight to the dark ages when the fundis are in charge, for one example.

I suppose. If North Korea can act with impunity over its people, why not the Taliban?

Welcome to Hell.

As has been suggested in another thread, the worst invention of the human species is religion.
Really it is dogma. Religion could definitely stand to ditch some it's foul teachings and instructions and penalties, but it is dogma that drives such lunatics just as it did in the USSR (especially under Stalin), just as it did when the Nazis controlled Germany. Dogmatically adhering to principles drove witch burnings, sacrificial genocide, the tribes who fought against each other to dominate in others for mythical "king of kings" status, or even those like Rome who overrode all local laws and enforced strict Romanism on those they dominated. It's also what drives Cancel Culture, animal and environment extremists, and SJWs are often just as dogmatic to their ideologies as Fundamentalist Evangelicals are to theirs.

I really tried to give them (taliban) the benefit of the doubt, but that is out of the window now :( Those guys are pure evil in my eyes. And I take a firm stand against them.
