Pornography poll

Should pornography be bannes? If so, is it because or partially because it exploits women?

I know I have already posted on this thread but I just want to say again that yes, I still think that pornography ought to be banned. I feel very strongly about this. I feel that it is objectifying of both women and men. I also feel like pornography has a very bad effect on society.

The Social Cost of Pornography - Chastity

So we should ban something to the rest of the public simply because you don't like it? I don't like brussel sprouts, maybe I should try to get them banned as well. (Heck... If I said it was because of my religion, I'd already have the Republican Party's support.)

I gave my reasons for banning it which include that it objectifies women and that it is harmful to society. So no, we would not be banning it simply because I don't like it.

If you take a look at studies that don't have such an obvious agenda, and I've posted quite a few sources in this thread, if there is any kind of correlation between society's well-being and pornography it would be that the world is actually a better place with pornography. In places where porn has become more available or legalized a reduction in sexual assaults occurs even as the rate of other types of crime rise. Correlation doesn't equal causation but if porn had a negative effect on society you would expect to see the opposite results and not no increase in sexual crime and especially not a reduction. At a minimum the statistics show that porn doesn't have a negative effect at all and may actually be positive overall.

Does it objectify women any more than current pop music concerts, of which 86%* are composed of male performers, objectify men? Or, how about sports, where what athletes do is far more important than who they are, what they believe, or what they had for breakfast? Just what is this objectification you see as being so harmful to society? And in what way does it harm society?

And let us not forget the obvious objectification of women due to religion. Women are thought of as inferior to men. They are just there to cater to the man's every whim, pop out babies, and make sandwiches...and God forbid they get an education lest they get stoned to death or shot in the streets.

The mere immorality of something isn't just cause to ban it. Think about what you're advocating, you want the state legislate morality. You don't see a slippery slope here? I see porn much like junk food and smoking. You probably shouldn't, but I'm not going to tell you that you can't.

And of all the moral issues to feel strongly about, people getting off to naughty videos is a bizarre choice. There some truth to the saying that it's actually the religious who are often the most obsessed with sex.

Yeah. Banning it won't help anything, either. Honestly, the real problem is the industry. It's very abusive. The modeling industry is very abusive, as well, but that doesn't mean we should ban modeling.

Strange. I feel the same thing about Christianity and Islam.

Your source would suggest that 86% of the inductees into the Music Hall of Fame are male, not that 86% of current pop music concerts are done by males.

Correct. Effectively dismantling a fragment of exploitative culture while rendering personal freedom intact.

Well i think that no one should be paid for doing work. Effectively dismantling a fragment of exploitative culture while rendering personal freedom intact.

All work is exploitative. This doesn't render personal freedom intact, it restricts it further by removing the choice to pay for and be paid for a service rendered.

exploit - to make use of meanly or unfairly for one's own advantage

I disagree.

This doesn't render personal freedom intact, it restricts it further by removing the choice to pay for and be paid for a service rendered.

Would you consider the freedom of exploitation a personal right? In a Utopia where man is fair and true perhaps prostitution would more manageable, but I'm afraid we aren't that mature yet.

Well i think that no one should be paid for doing work. Effectively dismantling a fragment of exploitative culture while rendering personal freedom intact.

That's nice hun.
