That's outrageous. School lunches should be free in public schools, anyway. They force you to be there by law so they should feed them on their own dime.

I heard that since this happened there has been a massive spike in non payment there. Seems the parents figured out a way to get rid of em legally. "nope we arent paying the kids kids a pain in the *** tired of it"

    .

I liked this part of the letter:

"After complaints, district officials announced they plan to send out a less threatening letter next week."

Which I can only imagine would likely involve forcing the kids into after-school servitude until the bill is paid. That'll teach these struggling parents to waste their money on food and clothes for their kids.

When I read the article one thought that crossed my mind was put them in foster care for unpaid lunch bills, yeah that would be cheaper on the state how? lol

Why should college students be the only ones with school debt? Share the load and give the kids a start on the American Dream with a debt that they will be paying off for years.

Twelve years of public school lunch tab's. The average kid should have paid off their high school lunch bill with accruals by 2024.

    From the article: "...
The letter claims the unpaid bills could lead to dependency hearings and removal of their children for not providing them with food.

"You can be sent to dependency court for neglecting your child's right to food. The result may be your child being taken from your home and placed in foster care," the letter read.

After complaints, district officials announced they plan to send out a less threatening letter next week."

I don't think this district has taken into account or reported fairly that these kids parents in the so called arrears for these lunch monies may be bringing their lunches to school.
Some parents prefer their children to eat a certain diet that a school cafeteria can't always accommodate.

Do they think that these families are just sitting on stacks of cash and are refusing to pay simply because they don't want to?

    That's...'the squad' doing the accounting.

Now me...I sent lunch with my kids. Every day. Sure, they got tired of PB&J sandwiches, tuna fish and bologna, but hey. They also got apples and bananas and grapes and stuff to trade for the potato chips their friends all brought. Everybody was happy.

I can't help but think that this school system is probably sending spam alert letters to helicopter moms who are in bento box competitions.

Follow up on the OP story. Believe it or not, It now gets crazier lol. It's sad.

CEO: Schools reject offer to pay students’ late lunch bills

"The president of a Pennsylvania school board whose district had warned parents behind on lunch bills that their children could end up in foster care has rejected a CEO’s offer to cover the cost, the businessman said Tuesday.

Todd Carmichael, chief executive and co-founder of Philadelphia-based La Colombe Coffee, said he offered to give Wyoming Valley West School District $22,000 to wipe out bills that generated the recent warning letter to parents.

But school board President Joseph Mazur rejected the offer during a phone conversation Monday, Carmichael spokesman Aren Platt said Tuesday. Mazur argued that money is owed by parents who can afford to pay, Platt said."

Yeah I heard a radio show* that discussed that subject. It's actually something I would be privy for, even if Republicans in general are not.

A kid that's hungry cannot learn very well and it would be a good feeling to know that kids walk out of schools properly fed and feeling a bit better as well.

*I think I might have been NPR.

I can't believe the school president denied the CEO of that company that wanted to pay for the lunches.
