Diaspora elated; team of officials from US Embassy in Delhi visits shrine to discuss security matters

The Sikh Diaspora is elated over the proposed visit of US President Barack Obama to the Golden Temple in the beginning of November when he tours India. A team of US officials visited the shrine on Wednesday and met government and Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) authorities to take stock of security issues ahead of the visit.

While the officials preferred to keep the visit low key and did not issue any statement, the SGPC functionaries said they discussed the preparedness that is required to be ensured for the “VVIP visit”.

Officials from the US Embassy in Delhi toured the entire Golden Temple complex, noting down every detail of the vast area. They also visited top hospitals and establishments and took stock of emergency services in the city. “They came here to see the preparations that are required to be taken up during the visit,” said SGPC secretary Dalmegh Singh.

Premier of South Australia Mike Rann (L), his wife Sasha Carruozzo (C) and Australian High Commissioner in India Peter Vaghese (R) prepare chappati (flatbread) for a communal vegetarian meal, known as 'langar', at a community kitchen at the Golden temple sikh shrine in Amritsar on September 10,2010

US Ambassador to India, Timothy J Roemer along with his wife Sally, performs voluntary service in the community kitchen during his visit to the Golden Temple, the most sacred place for Sikhs in Amritsar, India. 14/02/2010.

More than 80,000 PERSON eat at free Kitchen /langar per Day irrespective of Religion

The New York Times

AMRITSAR, India — The groaning, clattering machines never stop, transforming 12 tons of whole wheat flour every day into nearly a quarter-million discs of flatbread called roti. These purpose-built contraptions, each 20 feet long, extrude the dough, roll it flat, then send it down a gas-fired conveyor belt, spitting out a never-ending stream of hot, floppy, perfectly round bread.

Soupy lentils, three and a third tons of them, bubble away in vast cauldrons, stirred by bearded, barefoot men wielding wooden spoons the size of canoe paddles. The pungent, savory bite wafting through the air comes from 1,700 pounds of onions and 132 pounds of garlic, sprinkled with 330 pounds of fiery red chilies.

It is lunchtime at what may be the world’s largest free eatery, the langar, or community kitchen at this city’s glimmering Golden Temple, the holiest shrine of the Sikh religion. Everything is ready for the big rush. Thousands of volunteers have scrubbed the floors, chopped onions, shelled peas and peeled garlic. At least 40,000 metal plates, bowls and spoons have been washed, stacked and are ready to go.

Oh dear. Half the population already thinks he's an Arab Muslim from Kenya. The sight of Obama in a turban will only further confuse them.

Amritsar man is Argentina’s Peanut Prince!
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, September 18
When first US Astronaut Neil Armstrong landed on the moon, folklore is that he bumped into some Sikhs strolling there. They told a perplexed Armstrong that they had landed there right after Partition! Similarly, an Indian delegation to Argentina led by Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar, and including Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal, was welcomed by a tall and handsome Sikh sporting a flashy red turban among others -- Simmarpal Singh.

Indian Ambassador to Argentina, Rengaraj Viswanathan has described Simmarpal as a role model for success in agribusiness in his blog. “The role model has become the target pursuit of hot Argentine models. When they see his flashy red turban, they chase him; they follow his car and stalk him everywhere... When I visited Rio Cuarto County Club on May 16 last year, the Argentine players asked me where they could buy a turban and how to wear it. I asked them the reason for this interest. They showed me a villa within the country club complex and said ‘Here lives an Indian Maharaja. He looks handsome with his turban. When he goes to the nightclubs, he gets premium service and gets it free because they think he is a Maharaja’,” wrote the Ambassador about his first meeting with Simmarpal.

Um... why, exactly, would visiting a Sikh temple further the image that Obama is a Muslim? Is that supposed to be reasonable thinking?
It may be because of the (mis)conception that beard = Muslim. Obama in a place with many people with beards = Obama coming out as a Muslim. Even in my city with a rather large population of Sikhs, people still mistake them for Muslims.
