Nigel Farage says he is standing down as leader of the UK Independence Party.

Mr Farage said his "political ambition has been achieved" with the UK having voted to leave the EU.

Nige's life's work has been completed. He can now have a happy retirement.

Thoughts? What will happen to UKIP after this? The very word 'independent' in the name UKIP has now become defunct.

UKIP donor Arron Banks has said he'll be starting a new party.

But isn't that a bit like getting the bus heading towards the cliff at speed, then jumping off and waving goodbye?

Hi...
No. Once an objective has been achieved, only a total fanatic would continue on. :)

As I said just a couple posts earlier, Farage would never be in government anyway. It doesn't matter either way.

I also heard he's quite exhausted, he has been fighting for this for decades.

I think that ukip has done it's work. Time for it to dissolve.
But we could do with right, central and left parties, and we haven't got any of these worth mentioning. At least the Scots have got a party, and a leader.
Do you think that a UKIndepence, freedom and better breeding prospects for Badgers party might get floated..... Cheaply!?

I'm guessing that even though the leave vote succeeded there is little will in the British government to enact the changes. I think what you are seeing here is a bunch of people realizing they cannot actually make this happen.

I do think however, that yea.. Farage has fought the fight for all this time, from nearly the moment he was first elected. I'm sure he's looking for a break.

How did Her Majesty the Queen vote?
And how will she vote in the upcoming Scottish Independence referendum?
Tom
President Obama asked her to vote remain, so she voted for Brexit. Shortly before the upcoming Scottish Independence referendum she will personally turn over the scone of stone to the Scottish Government's Location & Asset Management department and will herself famously abstain from voting.

It is difficult for me to imagine what a person who actually enters politics in order to deflagrate Brexit would think.

What would typical arguments and feelings of a Brexit-supporter be? Something to do with the need for protection from "foreign" decisions about migration, economy, "sovereignity", I assume?

As a Leave voter I can tell you... Pretty much. Some's main concerns were immigration, others sovereignty, many a combination of the two, and a few others that the EU would be a big roadblock for socialist policy. There are a diverse range of views within the Brexit camp.

A friend of mine did some flyering for Lexit, the left-wing case to Leave:

http://www.leftleave.org

(There's in fact a pro-immigration argument in there, that the EU discriminates against non-EU citizens and has created a European-preferred migration policy)

Just interesting how so many different sides and reasons came together for the Brexit campaign. (The main two really are sovereignty and immigration though)

I thought Brexit was mainly right-wing?
No, without the Labour working class Brexit wouldn't have won (from the left-wing north to the Tory south, Leave won in majority all over England, apart from London). Before that it was more of an internal Tory party issue. That was never enough to win a national vote.

Is it true that God voted for Brexit by sending especially bad weather to densely populated areas of "Remain" voters?
Tom
No, I'm pretty sure God, being a conservative, was on the remain side of this one. The weather was a reward.
