I think humans have changed. Most of us just don't know it. Well from a non-Christian perspective Jesus could be a teacher, who taught good things akin to the Buddha or Confucius, and after his death his followers twisted the message. Seeing as the gospels aren't eyewitness accounts, this isn't hard to imagine.
Christianity was just a tool to keep the downtrodden masses in line. It continues to be an effective tool for whoever wields it.
