I think humans have changed. Most of us just don't know it. The whole gospel message tells us that we are changed, and here's how to act like it.

Well from a non-Christian perspective Jesus could be a teacher, who taught good things akin to the Buddha or Confucius, and after his death his followers twisted the message. Seeing as the gospels aren't eyewitness accounts, this isn't hard to imagine.

Christianity was just a tool to keep the downtrodden masses in line. It continues to be an effective tool for whoever wields it.

That's true of most ideologies. It dosen't mean it was created for that purpose or has to be used that way.

An excellent and valid question to be sure. The best way to get an answer, if you really want one, is ask the nice people that will be at your door step someday soon. Make sure you ask them and make sure you the time for the conversation. If you don't have the time when they come, make an appointment, they will surely keep it.

Why is 'earth' in quotations? Is there really a secret other name for this planet?

Jesus' purpose certainly wasn't to ensure that everyone was perfect on 'earth'. Is that what you think it was supposed to be?

Reading Mark it appears Jesus was a failed Messiah so nothing has changed.

Mark8Trembling and bewildered, the women went out and fled from the tomb. They said nothing to anyone, because they were afraid.
