Is(n't) Rap dead yet?

What do you think will be the next wave to replace "Rap"? And how long will it take to arrive? No, really, I mean, need to know. Will Rap survive as long (haha) as Disco? Will it be dying any time soon? Real soon?

Rap, like many music forms we've created, will never die, and as a fad it seems to be booming again in the younger generation. Most rap sucks, but still, it will keep going.

Aesop Rock - Daylight

Yo...put one up shackle me, not clean logic procreation
I did not invent the wheel I was the crooked spoke adjacent
While the triple sixers lassos keep angels roped in the basement
I walk the block with a halo and a stick poking your patience
Ya'll catch a 30 second flash visual
Dirty cooperative Neptune blue head hurt splits
Ridiculous fathom the splicing of first generation
**** up or trickle down anti hero smack (Cracking!)
I paste the game to zero all completion green (Splash!)
Took an early retirement pick a dream
American nightmare hogging the screen
I'll hold the door open so you can stumble in
if you would stop following me around the jungle gym
Now it's an honor and I spell it with the 'H' I stole from heritage
Marry crutch stolen wretched refuge refuse my teaming resonance
I promise temperance storm breed with a leaning conscious
In a credence relax responsive with my sports outsource the wattage
And I'm sleeping now (Wow!) And the settlers laugh
You won't be laughing when your covered wagons crash
You won't be laughing when the buzzards drag your brother's flags into rags
You won't be laughing when your front lawn is spangled with epitaphs
You won't be laughing
And I hang my boots to rest when I'm impressed
So I triple knot them then I forgot them
This origami dream is beautiful
but man those wings will never leave the ground
Without a feather and a lottery ticket, now settle down

All I ever wanted was to pick apart the day,
put the pieces back together my way.

Slacker bounded imitated tabloid headlined with the post
Shimmy cross the centerfold, and a dead time engulfed
Giving crumbs for the better souls with seven deadly sins
To hear the plane to crystal conscious
To results a low life counting on one hand what he's accomplished
Ok, lift me to activism chain activate street sweep
Plug in deteriorating zenith pen dragging
I hack swords wars for the morbid spreading of mad men
Now he's got soul
Sitting there licking log cabin in Charlie Chaplin waddle
I could zig zag and zig 'em again for the bad dreams
Sparking my brick wall windows another thicket storm
And if one night in Gotham without the wretched
Houston we have a problem
Dispatch a task of infested patch of city goblins
Who split how many freaks with box cuts of a high road bellow
Heads ripped! Watch red bricks turn yellow
Sort of similar to most backbones at camp Icarus
Raw feelings start congregating at pamper for bickering
Life's not a ***** life is a beautiful woman
Your only call her a ***** because she won't let you get that *****
Maybe she didn't feel y'all shared any similar interests
Or maybe you're just an ******* who couldn't sweet talk the princess
Kiss the speaker wire or either pass it for some pagan thresh hold
Stomach full of halo kibbles
Wings span cast black of porn visuals hear the duck hunt ticker tape
Vision and pick apart the pixels
I got a friend of polar nature and it's all peace
When I seek similar stars but can't sit at the same feast
Metal Captain!
This cat is asking if I've seen his little lost passion
I told him: "Yeah, but only when I pedaled past him"

Busdriver - Gun Control (Excerpt)

Why would you pride yourself on being a luger-holder
When the only gun you've held is a supersoaker?
But I'm the killer finger without a millimeter
Look on your face look just like gorilla sphincter
When the NRA gave you the middle finger
told you that you couldn't join the gun club due to your ethnic background
said you were born from the septic trash mound
So put the gun back down
You may think you're tuff, bullet-proofed up
But the men that carry guns got bullets and crew cuts
White conservatives who form the oligarchy
Who'll call you darky, and hate commies and Paul McCartney
They're through ******-shootin' at the general cinema
But the self image is a mental enema
Plus an exchange of gunfire
Is more likely to kill your man Busdriver

Sage Francis - Majority Rule

I got lectured once while eating breakfast for lunch
Said dad to me "Reality is nothing but a collective hunch
Whatever you want the truth to be, simply fool the masses
Attack them mentally with tools of power like the Masters
Get em in elementary school and college classes
Eventually you'll overrule their cowardly *****
Don't worry about society, they're all horrible ********"
With this knowledge I blast kids. stay dark like Howard's glasses
I'm "Stern!" plus I rule with an iron fist
With no concern, it's so cruel, where did I learn this?
It's in my gene pool. For permanent bliss
It seems cool, only if you suffer from eternal ignorance
Internal innocence rejects external filth. Hurdle the guilt
My ancestors left. Dress with a traditional kilt
Curdled milk that's under suspicion will get spilt
Ain't no use crying. Who's lying about the empire I built?
Another self proclaimed historian
With Einstein as his passenger, and a flux capacitor in his Delorean
Rewrote my past, taught me sin
When we spoke at last he caught me in the chin
There was no need to ask, I know he fought me to win
My broken task is born again, let a new war begin
I think he saw me grin. Played my *** like a sucka
Turned that brunch between me and my father into our last supper

So now I'm orphaned into this world of a rewritten past
Where they force my girl to clean and force me to sit in class
The teacher laughs as he preaches math, beats me with a staff
Because the text we read expects us to bleed each paragraph
I speed through the chapter fast. My prospectful wife
Hangs her pride at half mast, force fed domestic life
Is giving her a fat ***...she can't eat no more
"We'll see who laughs last" is what she speaks so sure
as she sweeps the floor
Her bare feet are sore. I'd massage her toes
But she's way too busy doing dirty laundry and washing my clothes
This ******* *** took us back to the dark ages
My heart races. He's got 1 out of 3 blacks locked in cages
Sage is heading for the mic, but they blocked the stages
Dopes took his notebook, said "Don't look!" as they blotched the page
Ignoramuses must have "idio-dildos" stuck up in their anuses
Dominatrixes explain how pleasurable of a pain this is
I ain't with this game of his.I'm looking for a loophole
Just because you look the part, don't mean you can play, ask Manute Bol
My absolute role is to save whatever is left of me
The last of my true soul, so I dress up like the referee
To get the coach on every bench ******
They approach me with a clenched fist
So I throw up their past lives and say, "Catch this!"
They get the drift, but fans rush the court
Propaganda programs they hold in their hands
brain washed and flushed their thought
Now it's a blood sport. My girl ain't with this strange land
She was fronting like a cheerleader as she figured out the game plan
Made peeks at play sheets, memorized them like the Rain Man
Conducted her own brain scan, then reversed the chain of command
"She learned the formulas?" The story is unraveling
She seduced Einstein by dressing up like Marilyn..
Monroe. now she's got a Manson look in her eyes
And a grin that's stretching so wide. Damn, son, I'm petrified!

Sage Francis - Slow Down Ghandi

On my soap box yelling into megaphones.
Killing hard rocks using carcasses as stepping stones.
Had to promise that I'd stop holding my marches
The day that Chris Columbus got crucified on golden arches.
My pedestal was too tall to climb off,
In fact that's the reason for the high horse.
And from up here I see Marines and Hummers on a conquest;
Underdogs with wonder bras in a push-up contest,
All for the sake of military recruitment.
It felt like Kent State the way they targeted the students,
I galloped off whistling "Ohio."
The rest of them, stuck doing stand up at a cricket convention.
What would they die for?
Is it the same machine that leaves the quality of life poor?
An abominable colony of cyborgs?
Clogging up the property that I bought with eyesores?

That clever ad campaign ain't worth
The time taken from minimum wage labor;
I don't care how half-naked or fake she looks,
She smells like dirty cash and aged paper books.
Who would she die for?
Slow down Gandhi, you're killin' em

Now it's whistle blower vs. the pistol holder;
Case dismissed, they'll lock you up and throw away the key witness.
Justice is the whim of a judge, check his chest density,
It leaves much room for error, and the rest left to destiny.
The West Memphis 3 lost paradise,
It's death penalty vs. suicidal tendencies.
All I wanted was a ******* Pepsi.
Institution.
Making you think you're crazy is a billion dollar industry.
If they could sell sanity in a bottle
They'd be charging for compressed air,
And marketing healthcare.
They demonize welfare,
Middle class eliminated,
Rich get richer til the poor get educated.

But some of y'all still haven't grown into your face,
And your face doesn't quite match your head.
And I'm waiting for a brain to fill the dead space that's left,
You're all, "Give me ethnicity or give me dreads."
Trustafundian rebel without a cause for alarm,
Cause when push turns to shove
You jump into your forefathers arms.
He's a banker, you're part of the system,
Off go the dreadlocks in comes the income.
The briefcase (the freebase)
The sickness (the symptom)
When the cameras start rollin' stay the **** outta the picture pilgrim!

Mr. Save The World, spare us the details,
Save the females from losing interest.
And Miss Save The Universe,
You're a damsel in distress,
Tied down to a track of isolated incidents.
Generalize my disease,
I need a taste of what it's like.
Living off the fat of kings,
I play the scab at your hunger strike.
Slow down Gandhi, you're killin'em.

One love, one life, one too many victims.
Republicrat, Democran, one party system.
Media goes in a frenzy,
They're stripped of their credentials.
Presidential candidates can't debate over this instrumental.
Let 'em freestyle, winner takes all,
When the music's dead, I'll have Ted Nugent's head hangin' on my wall.
Kill one of ours, we'll kill one of yours.
With some friendly fire, that's a funny term, like civil war.

Six in the morning, police at my crib.
Now my nights consist of two toothpicks and eyelids.
The crucifix and vitamins, music that is pirated.
New flavored food made of mutated hybrids.
Uh, they tell me that it's not that bad.
It ***** you up good, but its not that bad.
They hold on to these tales till it's the dog that wags.
God save us all if he lets the cat out the bag.

Who's the one to blame for this strain in my vocal chords?
Who can pen a hateful threat but can't hold a sword?
It's the same who complain about the global war,
But can't overthrow the local joker that they voted for.

They call the shots
but they're not in the line of fire.
I'd call the cops
but they break in the line of duty.
Lets call a stop to the abuse of authority.
The truth keeps calling me, and I'm gonna live to tell the story.

So look for truth, quit seeking forgiveness.
You need to cut the noose, but you don't believe in scissors.
You support the troops by wearing yellow ribbons?
Just bring home my motherf**kin' brothers and sisters.

Cause they don't call the shots
but they're in the line of fire.
I'd like to call the cops
but they're breakin' the line of duty.
It's time to call a stop
To the abuse of authority.
The truth keeps calling me
And I'm gonna live to tell the story.

I don't understand how a genre where every single "artist" sounds exactly the same and who all "rap" about the exact same pretentious and shallow materialistic and misogynistic drivel can appeal to anyone. Not to mention the deliberate butchering of the language.

I don't understand how a race of humans that are so dark, that all look and sound the same can appeal to anyone. Not to mention they all like chicken!

dust1n posted some good examples above. I like Aesop Rock, and there are some great underground artists out there who aren't in it for the bling or the chicks.

Heard of Atmosphere? Army of the Pharaohs?

When it comes to the commerical side of rap, I have a deep appreciation for Jay-Z. IMO he's a brilliant artist.

Not so much is it racism I felt from his post, just typical stereotyping.

I just know I'm going to kill this thread by posting another youtube music video containing rap......

really? because all i felt from his post was a dislike of rap.........

i feel mostly the same way about death metal, is that in some way a stereotyping of Scandinavians?

By that analogy aren't you implying that rappers and rap culture represent the face of an entire race? Doesn't that make you the racist?

Nice try, but no it doesn't. My post was simply showing how ignorance is ignorance. Some people can't tell the difference sometimes between opinion and ignorance.

Your post simply illustrated by your very nature your ignorance for the massive and mixed degree of the "rap" genre, and lumped it all into one bad bag.

Your loss...

You just don't get it. My post earlier was to show how stupid it is to generalize about something like rap, whether it is race, music, art or whatever.

It just so happens my example of generalizing used race, I could have used anything to make the point.

He whitewashed a complete genre, just like I generalized about blacks. Both are wrong and equally wrong.

Generalizing a race or color is an attack on people.
Generalization of a music genre is a far cry from racism.
(BTW, I can not stand Death Metal, sorry for the generalization)
