The art form is about as close to poetry as I can see. It is so easy for me to follow a good artist's passion, skill, and perspective.

There are rap songs I enjoy. Like the ones from Eminem and Snoop Dog. Then again most of them I can't appreciate. One of the posts here got it spot on. Most of them just sound like the next one.

I really got back into hip hop when I started exploring spoken work again. I didn't realize that the room for lyricism is very wide in the genre, and relies mostly on what the person is saying. A very different approach to music classically.
