As you might know, the presidential race is significantly closer than the news reports of it would seem to indicate. Mr. Trump is the first president in American history to have never risen above 50% approval in the Gallup Tracking Poll at any point during his presidency, yet he is within striking distance of closing the gap between himself and Mr. Biden to win re-election. Moreover, that gap historically narrows as election day nears.

So perhaps you might expect Mr. Biden to be doing everything to expand the Democratic base, bring in new voters and groups, and advance and consolidate his lead.

As it happens, he is not. On the contrary, he seems to be giving the finger to major groups of potential supporters. For instance, he has just picked Kamala Harris as his running mate, a person who offends numbers of Democrats, who racked up a record as an Attorney General of oppressing certain generally defenseless groups of people, and who is less popular in the Black community than Elizabeth Warren.

Meanwhile, his outreach to Hispanics is in many key areas of the country -- such as North Carolina -- virtually non-existent. As is his outreach to younger voters.

Again, he offers progressives -- who accounted for about 40% of the vote in the primary -- absolutely nothing of substance in order to woo their votes. He seems to be so anti-progressive that I'm starting to hear people say that Mr. Biden's real goal cannot be to beat Mr. Trump, but rather to crush the progressive movement in America. Since I'm not a mind-reader, I can't say that's what he's thinking, but his behavior does seem consistent with that. It makes me wonder if something like or similar to it is not actually true. Maybe he wants to both win the election and crush the progressives at the same time. But if so, can he?

As for myself, I still hope Mr. Biden wins, but I would not be surprised if Mr. Trump is re-elected, given Mr. Biden's apparent mismanagement of his campaign.

I can see it too. I tell people that if they do not vote for the next likely candidate after President Trump he might win again. I have seen only one sign up for what's his name? Oh ya, Mr. Biden.

Sad song. As a moderate democrat myself, I am happy Biden and Harris are together.
Biden is more moderate and Harris is more progressive. Should appeal to a larger block of voters.
Where are you getting your information from? I've heard Fox talking about what you said.
I hear talking points like "where's the enthusiasm," "where's the wooing?!"
If you vote and need to be wooed to support a candidate, you're doing it wrong.
There are more important things about voting, like policies. Wooing is irrelevant to me. But if they got it, it's icing on the top.
Obama was a wooer. But I would have supported him if he weren't.
Don't let your voting decision be based on being wooed.

A rather good (and rather long) evaluation of Kamala Harris can be found here.

Of course it is more important for Biden to crush the progressive movement. When Trump gets a second term, not much changes but when progressives (real progressives) get to rule, the gravy train of donations may stop. They could get big money out of politics.

Ms Harris more progressive? Sounds like you've been listening to some low grade news sources. Maybe Fox, maybe MSNBC? If you truly think Ms Harris is more progressive than Mr Biden, please name three positions on which she is significantly more progressive.

The one point I wonder about, young voters have already renounced Biden as too old without giving him a chance (a.k.a., they're being very prejudice against and judging by age and not ability), so he may not--understandable so--be wanting to invest the effort into a group who has shown they can be just as prejudice as the misogynists and racists they deride.

Thanks. I'm a little cautious about Vox since I've been burned by them in the past, but that particular article jives with what I've read elsewhere. On a personal level, I find much to admire about Ms. Harris, as well as somethings I do not admire. My point, however, is that she seems a net liability candidate when it comes to appealing to certain groups, and that perhaps Mr. Biden could have done better -- especially had he found a more progressive partner.

Are young voters rejecting him on age, or on his lack of progressive positions?

Elections are generally won by winning the centre, not the extremes.

Since he stepped up to run Ive heard floods and waves of charges that "he's too old." Of course no evidence to support their claim, nothing to back up significant mental decline, they just upfront said he's too old.

The youth vote, Latino vote, womens vote, and black vote isn't extreme but core voting blocs.

That's too bad because decades of polling has shown that -- among the American people -- the center in American politics is significantly to the left of the center among career politicians, such as Mr. Biden.

Biden was never going to win. The chance that you lose if a woman on your ticket for VP or President is currently 100%. (I wish that were different, but we gotta be real. The numbers don't care about our feelings.)

Incumbent Presidents have a 92% chance of winning for re-election for every election in the last 50 years. What they needed was a Yang or Tusli ticket, someone who was a real person who could shake up the moderates and fence-sitters on the center-right. They didn't do that -- they picked a highly objectionable VP (who is a woman) and an old-school southern Democrat with some controversial racist statements, actions, and leanings. If they had put forward Yang or Tulsi even I'd have to evaluate my vote, but Biden+Harris is a complete nonstarter. I not only hope they lose, but I also hope they lose in the most phenomenal way so they stop putting forth these dead-end candidates who no one actually likes. There are plenty of intelligent people left in the Democratic Party, but it's not these folks.

As far as the bloc argument: Harris is a black woman who persecuted the hell out of blacks, and women, in general, don't like her. No one likes Biden, not even the people that like Obama, lol.

*Snort.* "Center-right." Biden IS center right. The US just has so much extreme right that its moderates are seen as left. I wish the American voting base were a just a bit more educated on politics. Low information voting is the biggest reason we got to Trump. There's never been anything intelligent about voting that direction.

Are you working for Trump? Because what you write sounds like something that might come out of his reelection committee.

Look at her lifetime record. Seems pretty progressive to me. Perhaps you weren't aware that Kamala is a progressive? I think that's it.

I'd cede that Biden on his own is very much old-school neo-con Dem, but he's trying to suck up to the far left. I don't like the act of 'sucking up'... Trump certainty had the potential to be worse than what he is. But, after him being in office for nearly 4 years it's hard to make the sensational arguments anymore just because the proof doesn't bear it out. Is he perfect? No one is, but is he worse than Joe? I doubt it.

Trump is sitting in the oval office because the Dems keep pushing substanceless sell-out candidates that have no gravitas at all with the backbone of the country. (AKA, the nuclear family, hard-working Joe's and Jane's.) These are the people that the Dems have abandoned and it's why they're losing. They figure that out or they keep losing.
