The French Communist Party will be running their own candidate, Fabien Roussel, in the 2022 Presidential elections and is polling around 1-4% at the moment. It is therefore unlikely Roussel will make it in to the second round of voting. France's Communist Party was once a significant electoral force but has declined in recent years. The last time they ran their own candidate (I think) was in 2007.

Communist candidate in French 2022 election: 'We are very different from Mélenchon'

There isn't a huge amount of information on his candidacy in English unsurprisingly, but if you have any thoughts on the French Presidential elections, please feel free to share and discuss. :)

I am rather worried about this Zemmour guy. I just hope he and Le Pen engage in mutually assured destruction by cannibalising one another's votes. But if one of them makes it to the final round, it could be tense. There are a lot of French who feel their culture is always under threat, whether from American entertainment or N African muslim immigration. And it is special and it is fading a bit, though not just for these reasons in my opinion. But seductive to blame it on one (external) thing, of course, rather than modern life in general.

I was a bit surprised that Barnier was eliminated as the candidate for Les Republicains, but then I'm not in the loop on French politics.

I'm more worried that Zemmour will end up making Le Pen look reasonable. I don't think the French system really means they can cannibalize each other's votes though. If it was the US system, it would be almost guaranteed.

Still, Im wary on this. Zemmour seems too ridiculous to see as a legitimate threat. I would have thought the same of Trump once upon a time.

Despite Macrons low approval rating i think his chances of reaching the second round are quite good high. Le Pen who has dropped in the polls since Zemmour announced he will run still has enough clout for the second round to be a re-run if last time.

I feel sorry for the French. They don't know what they are actually playing with.

I'd have thought that the population of country where 20% used to regularly vote Communist might know quite a lot about what they may, or may not, be playing with - in comparison with the population of countries like the USA or UK where their presence has always been trivial, anyway.

Which is why 80% were regularly voting against them - probably because they knew a lot about what they may, or may not, have been playing with. Even without the omniscience of American Conservatives, shocking though that may be. ;)

France is a completely different system than the US. On a local level it is essentially democratic communist anyway. So yes, they know precisely what they are playing with and it ain't reds under the beds

Wrong, they know precisely what they are doing and the country runs reasonably well under the system of communes, cantons, districts and regions. They sure are not effected by historical mccarthyism type hysteria and far right rhetoric

No. They don't know what they are doing.

If this guy wins, it's game over for a free France.

This guy won't win and how come your crystal ball is shinier than anyone elses.

You seem to think the president of france has far more power than is given to them. France fought a revolution to rid itself of such dictatorship.

No president can or would dare run roughshod over the french Constitution

And again, yes they do know what they are doing. Despite your opinion of the average french voter they are extremely politically savvy.

No need for crystal balls for that history shows what a complete **** up America chose.

Anyway, even if Zemmour were miraculously elected, he would still need to abide by the constitution or have a revolution to deal with. Or create a new republic with a new constitution that the french electorate had voted for and accepted.

Come on, it's a binary choice: capitalism or evil.

Fancy that, having a communist on the ballot. Makes a change from shades of right wing!
