The F.B.I. -- represented by the chief of the Washington field office -- and the Department of Justice -- represented by the acting U.S. District Attorney for the District of Columbia -- gave a joint press conference on Tuesday that, so far as I know, is the first time such a conference has been given post 1/6.

They provided quite a bit of fresh, new information about what they are doing in response to 1/6, and corrected several popular misconceptions that have been making the rounds. As close to a "must see" as these things get.

The cause of 06th of January is Trump I would say. I am curious if the FBI let him get away with it
IF they send people into jail THEN they should send Trump into jail too
I am really curious IF they will be consistent here

The man says "we charge them as fast as possible"
Did they already put Trump in jail?

Trump is the single person most culpable, I think.
Well, at least if you don't take into consideration the
polarization that Rush Limbaugh and Rupert Murdoch
are largely responsible for having wrought -- along with
others -- over the past few decades.

But Trump did not, as he promised, lead the assault on
the Capitol building. And it seems to be emerging that
the mob was not without some sort of on the scene
leadership. If that indeed pans out to be the case, then
depending on their precise role, those leaders might be
charged with crimes appropriate to those who lead
insurrections. That's to say, crimes reflecting their
    causal role.

Yes. I do see it in the movies too, it's more safe to make use of a hitman doing the dirty work. The ones behind the screens get away. It's a dirty game, and if the FBI plays this game this time, I have no respect for them. IF they jail Americans and not Trump, my trust in US Law is zero

BUT it's also understandable that FBI and the ones in charge play this game
That way they cover for each other, and get away with it. I see right through them though
I am like 99% sure that Trump gets away with his crime, hardly a slap on the wrist even I think

D.Trump will never take responsibility for his crimes. Interesting that his daughter has other plans

The FBI cannot charge a sitting President. They may be able to do something after twelve noon Easter Standard Time January 20th 2021.

    Thanks, my mistake.

That might be an interesting day. Trump fired many people all these years, I got the feeling people were scared for him (like with Kim)
I would not be surprised if from that day onward many people finally will have the courage to speak out their mind about Trump

I wonder if the FBI's investigations and arrests will cause people to think twice before showing up on the 17th or the 20th.

The GOP and far-right media continue the slogan of "impeachment will further divide the nation."
    Well boo-f'n-hoo.
When you got one side calling for unity and the other side calling for war, you lost the argument immediately.
Republicans aren't interested in unity, they hate America and our democracy.

Whenever I hear that my thought is this: "You know what else causes division? A president who is intentionally causing division."

That's an interesting question. For the militia types, probably not. For the average Trumpian who sees this is all fun and games with stupid hats and silly slogans, maybe not so much. When it comes to being put in person for sedition, I think that could weed out the less than fully committed to the cause types. Or I could be wrong, and they are truly all insane and this will inspire them to martyr themselves for a sinking ship despot.

It's typical far-right spin to blame democrats for the division. Claiming democrats are the ones creating division by impeaching again.
Completely ignoring the intentional division created by the POTUS and republican officials a week earlier.

There's growing economic punishment. NY City just ended contracts with a Trump business and that's just the latest blow. Trump might wind up a bankrupt loser.

And NY State has cases running as well.

Anyone remember "twisting slowly, slowly in the wind" from Watergate. That's what's shaping up.

Besides, it's hard to convict mob bosses and Trump has acted like one.

Not everyone. Most likely -- by my guess -- fewer than a quarter will be deterred. Maybe down the road when there are not only arrests, but convictions, that will change.

I have a highly intelligent co-worker who, one day mid-fall, surprisingly started up a political discussion with me. I tend to much straddle the line until I know where my conversation partner stands with respect to politics. Anyway - he was talking about how crazy the protests and riots were during the summer, and this was during the time that Trump was starting to hint about what he would or wouldn't accept given election results. At a certain point he remarked that he thought that if Trump won, there would be likely be more protests and riots from "extreme leftists", but I replied that I thought that it was actually more probable that if Trump lost, there would be some form of violence from the other side. His response was an incredulous and breathy "Really?" I remember having a moment's thought at that time that his opinion must be quite severely influenced by the sway of the media he chooses to listen to. What seemed like an old-hat type of thought to me, based on clear and continual presentation of evidence by Trump himself was received as this improbable, nigh-impossible thing... and yet here we are.

Relatively few Republican politicians will turn against Trump because he still has huge voter support.

    TWO THUMBS UP!

I really don't care about unity either. I don't want to be unified with extremists and overly gullible people.

It will. Let's all try to be realists here. Impeachment -- even the mention of it -- is gasoline on the fire. But anyone who believes that warrants doing anything less than impeachment isn't even playing in reality's ballpark. Nor, for that matter, is anyone who believes impeachment, trial, and conviction is enough. I don't know how the rumor got started that you can knock down a fire by staying safely in the fire station and not rolling on it. But I guess that makes sense to some of us. It makes no sense to me. It's a theory or instinct that doesn't seem to be born out by history.

Gasoline on the fire happened last week. Impeachment is holding people who live without consequence accountable.
No one cares about one's feelings at this point, it's all about holding those accountable.

I hope that you are wrong. Trump is looking like a bully that has been exposed to more and more Republicans. Mitch McConnell appear to be rather irate with The Donald:

    Mitch McConnell’s Impeachment Endgame

I wanted to link the NY Times but no subscription and paywalls. Oh well. Mitch and Liz Cheney, the number one and three Republicans in the Senate both appear to be supporting conviction. They can see that Trump is ruining the party. With Trump about to leave and loose a huge amount of power he can no longer threaten his base. The best solution for the Republicans would be to find him guilty so that he could be not allowed to run for any position of trust again.
