Donald Trump makes some black friends.

When I say he made some black friends, what I mean is he made some black friends.

Trump is going after the artificial vote.
If he presents an image that blacks like him,
this can indeed influence some to feel comfortable
supporting him, ie, they'd be less an outsider in
their community....so it would feel, even if false..
And Trump has some appeal, given that they
have a large segment that is Christian, & hostile
to LGBLT folk.
Elections are often won by swaying just a small
percentage of voters on the margins of various
groups. This might be a winning move.

It's worth noting that the article says the BBC investigation "found no evidence directly linking the deepfakes it uncovered to Mr Trump’s campaign", but that many of them instead seem to be linked with right-wing media accounts.

It's still very disturbing, though. Especially if it has any kind of impact.

All the more reason to call it out when we see it. People should be on alert to this kind of thing. I know there will always be some who are fooled, but we can still try to pull back the curtain for those who have their eyes open.

Could be anyone doing it who wants him to win. Putin?

I agree.
But it will likely work to some extent.
The only defense is if the media expose
this to the extent that there's a backlash
by his intended audience.

If AI generated images can vote, why can't they run for office?

This whole deepfake business is getting out of hand.

If we're not careful, we'll have deepfakes running the whole government. Of course, the shallow fakes already running the government leave something to be desired, but they really should do something about this.

This has just barely started. Next will be realistic video, and you will not be able to tell looking at it that it is not real. They are doing this now, but so far they are silly and obvious. That will not always be the case.

We are going to have to be careful. From here on out even if you see it with your own eyes you will need to wait until it is verified. It is going to be tricky.

Yes. I think there has to be some sort of technological counter to this. It's like an ongoing cyber "war" of sorts, not just deepfakes, but other attacks, hacking, ransomware (just like United Healthcare got hit the other day). We need some sort of cyber version of Dudley Do-Right to police the internet.

This particular instance was not Putin. But one day it could be.

And this makes me think about that infamous "pee tape", Remember that? Everyone was talking about that in 2016. Well now if such a thing does not exist, they will create it.

There are going to be picture and video of political figures doing all kinds of things. And if the people creating these fakes are smart they will be subtle and they will conform to what people want to believe.

Trump is working very hard to get reelected (by working hard I mean that he is lying). His fellow Republicans see that he could use a helping had so that is what they are doing for him (and once again, I mean that his fellow Republicans are lightening his workload by making their own lies for Trump).

My real problem with this is that anyone can do it and to the point only a specialist will be able to determine it is fake. People need to get smarter and I don't see that happening

We are going to have to. We we have no choice. Even people who are reasonable and skeptical are going to have to become more skeptical, we are going to have to become more suspicious, and more patient.

I am not convinced that even experts are going to be able to prove these videos fake. But even if they can, which experts are we going to trust?

What are we going to do when we see a video of an expert testifying that the video in question is authentic. How will we know the video of the expert isn't fake?
