Humans have two centers of consciousness, which are the inner self and ego. The ego is the conscious center of the conscious mind, while the inner self is the conscious center of the unconscious mind. The inner self epitomizes the paradox of intelligence without full consciousness.
We are all aware of the ego; I think therefore I am. The inner self is typically unconscious in most people and takes work to make conscious. Most people are not even aware it exists. It runs the entire brain and nervous system using instinctive firmware; organic based software.
The ego and conscious mind has access to about 1-10% of the brain's capacity, while the inner self has 100% access to the brain. The inner self controls the mainframe part of the brain, while the ego, which came later in evolution/creation, is more like a PC terminal, that has its own operating system. The ego can learn to develop terminal access to the main frame, if it choses to develop this access. It takes years of effort to scratch the surface.
You can be intelligent, but not have conscious awareness of the inner self, which is unconsciously doing most of the data crunching in the background in all aspects of day to day living. For example, when we walk from point A to point B, the inner self helps to control and coordinate the muscles so the movement is fluid. The ego only has to think a command line; walk to there, and the inner self deals with all the logistics needed for fluid movement. The ego mistakenly assumes it does this all.
As an experiment, the next time you walk, consciously try to willfully make every muscle needed to walk, contract and/or expand using will power. What you will find is If you try to control every muscle, needed to walk, you will walk more like a stiff robot. The inner self is able to do more calculations per second and is able to smooth this out to fluid motion. Very few people are aware of how much the inner self does behind the scenes, all below conscious awareness. It is possible to have more direct access to the inner self, but it takes practice, starting with developing an awareness that it actually does exist.
This initial awareness can be unsettling since the inner self is currently integrated to an unconscious ego, while awareness requires we differentiate the inner self from these integrated things to make it conscious. This process of differentiation can upset the original integration. However, the new induced non equilibrium, will become the new starting point for a developing rapport with the inner self. The inner self will reintegrate the ego, but this time with conscious awareness part of the equation. The paradox of intelligence without consciousness, no longer applies.
A good primer book is the Undiscovered Self by Carl Jung.
