The best part of the new "major disaster" declaration is that it "would help fire victims with unemployment assistance, food aid and legal and mental health counseling among other federal programs, and would also make counties and cities eligible for federal financial assistance and help with repairing the billions of dollars of damage done to infrastructure."

It seems there are ways to help temper the damages these fires cause and a lot of it has to do with the way forestry is run in this state. According to Berkeley most of the firefighting budgets are tied up with suppression without ever addressing the causes themselves.

Some of the blame for the intensity of forest fires can be blamed on past policies that any forest fire was bad and should immediately be extinguished. This has led to the buildup of fuel on the forest floor and when a fire start it has plenty of fuel. In view of this prescribed burns are now a tool to help control fires and in some instances, as the 1988 fire in Yellowstone, let it burn.
