The French would be better off if they did the same.

In other words, there hasn't been a riot in the last fortnight and all previous riots were to do with EU membership.

You obviously have no concept of what a Sapeurs Pompier is. For your information the vast of firefighters in france are unpaid volunteers (my doctor is one) Only Paris (and i believe Lille) have a professional service.
Considering the risks they take (love to see you risk your life for free) i i think their demands are reasonable... Don't you?
