A world federated state is inevitable. Furthermore it won't be a tyranny.
The federated system would be just like in the United States, with a legislature, an executive, and a judiciary. As a matter of fact the fact that the colonies became a federated system gives us encouragement now that it can be done. Also Europe moved closer to peace with the EU which started with an agreement to share coal and steel resources and moved on from there.
The nations would cede some sovereignty to this federal government, but only with those problems that have to do with world security. All nations would only have enough arms to maintain order within their country, and the federal government would have a standing army to enforce peace.
We need this now, but of course the world is not moving very fast towards this system right now. Once events show that it is necessary and there is too much suffering, they will move to this, perhaps not all at once, but in steps. The world is interconnected together and the welfare of the part is the same as the welfare of the whole. This will be one of the principles of this government when it is formed.
We can agree on these principles that we will weave into the federated government. The world has already in 2005 agreed on the principle of the responsibility to protect. This means that if a nation either can't or won't take care of their citizens, the world will step in. This includes right abuses and genocide. If we can put our mind to it, we can agree on those principles that run the federal government.
The standing army won't be a tyranny if we can agree beforehand when the standing army specifically would be used, and all of the nation's representatives come together to decide to use it. Also, the world government would only be formed if such a mechanism is in place because the nations would never agree to anything else in their own interests.
Just in the fact that nuclear bombs are spreading means that eventually nuclear bombs will be used. If a nation gives nuclear materaial to terrorists, knowledge of building a nuclear bomb is accessible. This will cause enough suffering in the world to trigger a world federation. There are other problems too, such as the economic system breaking down and global warming and other environment concerns.
