I burst out laughing to read today that KFC sent out a promotional message to its German customers, inviting them to celebrate the anniversary of Kristallnacht, with cheesy chicken.

KFC apologises after German Kristallnacht promotion

The level of historical ignorance is appalling. As is also the cynical pretence of a corporation pretending to be friendly and in touch with the local culture by means of a computer-automated system, somewhere in the US, with no local human input or supervision whatsoever.

But it is so crass and insensitive it is actually very funny indeed. I bet that in the German office they've all been running around like a "kip zonder kop", as the Dutch would say. :D

It's sad, and also hilarious. They need a historian or anthropologist on their PR team.

Oops.

There was a Coke sign put up in Saudi Arabia a few decades back with three panels and no words: first, a man is seen sweating profusely and obviously uncomfortable, followed by a panel showing him holding a Coke bottle upside down and chugging it, followed by big smile a look of relief and pleasure. It backfired, and was a source of great amusement. Can you guess why?

All they need is just learn a little bit about those Nazi people who keep thrown around. Hell, even my mom knows just to google stuff like that.
It really just shows they are after money and nothing else, and will pander to any group that will give them huge returns on the advertising (like painting rainbows on things for a few weeks if the year).
But can we at least assume they aren't Holocaust deniers?
