Should Child Marriages be Banned Worldwide?

Secret Chief

nirvana is samsara
I see no problem

"...Between 2000 and 2015, over 200,000 minors were legally married in the United States, or roughly six children per thousand. The vast majority of child marriages in the U.S. were between a minor girl and an adult man. Most minors married were girls. In many cases, minors in the U.S. may be married when they are under the age of sexual consent, sixteen to eighteen for most states. In some states minors cannot legally divorce to leave their spouse, or enter a shelter to escape abuse...

...Critics have pointed out that laws regarding child marriage in the United States compare unfavorably to laws regarding child marriage in other countries. For instance, in 2017, Human Rights Watch pointed out that Afghanistan has a tougher law on child marriage than parts of the United States..."

Which religion of peace are you talking about? Christianity?

As to your question, I'm all for eliminating laws that allow child marriages with parental consent.

If a child consents to marriage then what's the problem? We give "rights" to everyone except children.
If a child can "demand" transgender surgery now then why can't they marry any other boy or girl, or
adult man or woman? Remember, in a secular society there is no "right" or "wrong", just what is fashionable
at the time.

A child cannot have "transgender surgery". Rarely, they'll let some 16 year olds have surgery if their dysphoria is severe enough, but you generally have to be 18 and most who have it are much older than that, it seems.

Kim Petras was the youngest person to have confirmation surgery, when she had it at 16, and I might have heard of one or two others having surgery at that age (not necessarily genital surgery):Kim Petras - Wikipedia

OK. Under 18.
Our kids 16-18 can marry quite legally with all parental consent.

We have a recent law 2014 which outlaws any marriages under that age. Any kind of sex is unlawful under that age.

The question posed was "Should child marriages be banned worldwide?" to which I responded "yes." I assume that achieving that goal would entail an informed debate on minimum age (with or without parental consent).

Trouble is, a significant % of children in their early teens have sexual experience.
That is a different issue.

In practice, child marriages tend to be mostly legal with parental consent, and tend to be between a female minor and an adult man.
Ok, so, the real issue is the age difference, rather than the age both get married.
What if both love each other and chose to be with each other without anybody forcing them to get married? What if a 15 years old girl falls in love with a 30 or 40 years old man?

Just recently a law allowing child marriage (at Puberty) to be legalized in Somalia has come under world scrutiny. The Religion of peace has been very silent with only international political groups reminding the Somalian Government of previous international agreements to preventing child marriages. Somalia is not the only country which acquiesce in child marriages. Should there be a worldwide ban on such a practice?
Bill endorsing child marriages in Somalia roundly condemned
Define child.
And please be so kind as to do so in a manner that makes legal sense.
I mean, you are asking about a law be put in place, right?

Then define child marriage.
Again, in a manner that makes legal sense.
The whole proposed law thing, you know.

You one of those who support "gay marriage"? If so, for how long? 20 years ago
few people supported "gay marriage."
You support "reform" to euthanasia to open it to anybody? Five years ago nearly
everyone said it wouldn't take that step. 20 years ago few supported even restricted
euthanasia.
You support chemical castration or surgery for children who claim to be "transgender"?
Five years ago the very idea was anathema to most people.
You believe the term 'male' and 'female' should be removed from birth certificates? Three
years ago this was impossible.

Read my profile below. Morals are no long a religious thing but political.

THERE is a famous US documenrty made in the thirties(first film with a nude 14 year old girl) discouraging men to marry children.
Discouraging, yes, but not outlawing it.

I think it's a little bit of both, actually.

I don't know, what do you suppose should happen if a child falls in love with a grown man?

And you believe that the people who are now okay with equality in marriage used to be against it five years ago?

A child cannot consent to marriage, because they are a child.

EDIT: In most countries where child marriage is legal (such as several US states), child marriage typically requires parental consent, effectively making an end run around the idea of ages of consent by having the parents decide that their child is going to have a sexual relationship.

But the state can remove a "child" from its parents in the name of transgender rights
in a growing number of countries.
Children are being sexualized.
Child porn grows exponentially.
Give up - kids have rights too. Or at least, that's what is being said by a growing
number of people.

Good luck with that.

No, in the year 2,000 most people thought "gay marriage" was a joke.
The lesson is - what today is "wrong" can easily be overturned into a
"right" within a generation.
Now think hard about what is left to be "wrong" about.
Polygamy will be here 15 years max.
Even adultery isn't so bad anymore.

Children have rights, yes. Which is primarily the reason why I do not think parents should be allowed to make an end run around ages of consent by effectively designating their child as partner to a grown adult for the purpose of a sexual relationship.

Do you disagree?

What social activists have learned is to not confront an issue head on, but bring about
change in a subtle way. For instance, before euthanasia was acceptable people spoke
about "six months to death" and "insufferable pain" etc.. Once the legislation is accepted
then demand "reform" to encompass any situation.
Same with "decriminalization of homosexuality" etc..
So they will change the meaning of the world "child." They will talk about how pederesty
was common practice in Roman Grecian times, and in native societies. They will talk about
how the sky isn't falling in and so on. And then maybe one day an adult male can marry
two 12 year old girls for a weekend only marriage. I believe it's coming.

65 years ago my 21 yr old friend dated a 15 yr old girl.
And the flack he got from mostly everybody!
Everybody knew better than those two.
The girl's parents refused to allow any marriage.
The Police kept interviewing her in attempts to prove a sex crime against her etc.
As soon as she reached 18yrs this couple married.
They still are. Great Grand-Parents now.
My friend is very poorly now and I can't get to speak with him, but his lovely wife (who wanted to be a 16yr old bride but got refused) still sends cards, etc.

Legislators need to think very very carefully before they rip up young relationships that can make the whole distance. And how many middle aged marriages mess up?

It's all a lottery.
