Russia's annexation of 4 Ukrainian regions...will China take notice?

The real question here is not so much whether China will take notice of the annexation, which is of course illegal following an obviously sham "referendum," but whether China will take note of how the west (basically, NATO) will respond -- or not.

Because that response will inform China's next decisions about its designs on Taiwan.

If the west lets Putin get away with this latest, then I suspect that China will assume it no longer has any real reason to worry about an armed takeover.

Thoughts?

How do you think the West and NATO should respond to Putin now, knowing that he has the world's largest nuclear arsenal? Would engaging in a third world war help Ukraine--or anybody else?

It is the kind of situation that underlines why nuclear disarmament may well be the only way to avoid the evils that nukes can cause. If they're used, they wipe out entire regions. If they're not used, the mere threat can deter other countries from pushing back against unstable warmongers like Putin. The mere existence of nuclear arms is a no-win situation.

I'm confident China will agree with international observers who supervised the referendums held in the Donbass, Kherson and Zaporozhye regions considering this as " a step towards a political settlement of the conflict in Ukraine, as well as based on the principle of the right of self-determination of peoples guaranteed by the Charter of the United Nations.

"In a press conference held in Moscow today, international observers pointed out the facts of pressure on participants in referendums by the Kyiv regime, and stressed that the organization of voting in referendum operations is in accordance with international standards."

Of course Moscow will say what others aren't and says it's good and legit what the has been condemned throughout the world.
Elections forced by an invader and held under threat of violence aren't considered legit.

Oh, pshaw! Just because I'm holding a gun to your head doesn't mean I'm telling you how to vote, now does it? I mean, you can freely choose how to vote -- and I can freely choose whether or not to pull the trigger. There's no relationship at all!

Please let us keep in mind the territory of Crimea, previously controlled by the Crimean Khanate, was annexed by the Russian Empire on 19 April 1783 and remained a part of Russia until U.S.S.R. President Krushchev inexplicitly transferred Crimea from Russia to Ukraine in 1954. Since the dissolution of the U.S.S.R. justifiably nullifies any agreements made by the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, We should agree with Crimea's return to its previous non-Soviet status of belonging to Russia.

Many thousands pf Crimeans gathering in celebration of their referendum vote by a 20-1 margin favoring their joining the Russian Federation was most likely indicative of their votes willingly having been freely cast instead of them being coerced under duress at gunpoint to vote for being annexed by the Russian Federation.

Out of curiosity -- in situations that are generally regarded as "free," when did you ever see a free vote result in a 20-1 majority?

In 74 years, I never have!

And do you get all your "information" from videos of parties? Videos that can be easily faked?

And, what does Crimea have to do with the latest takeovers? Do you know how many people have left Crimea since 2014? And where they went? The 40% who were not ethnically Russian? How about the Tatars?

They won't. Because it will be the US itself they will have to deal with.

Not a smaller militarily weaker country like the Ukraine with exception of course to their bravery and tenacity.

....
And, what does Crimea have to do with the latest takeovers?

Crimeans celebrating their referendum vote in favor of joining the Russian Federation is historic precedent demonstrating a free and fair referendum vote in favor of joining the Russian Federation happening in states adjacent to the Russian Federation,

And therefore, four other provinces must obviously doing the same. Is that what you are asserting?

China watches with keen interest.
And 1 hour after conquering Taiwan, they'll be hungry for more.

(You thought it. I posted it.)

Please let us keep in mind in addition to the Crimean referendum for annexation by Russia in 2014 there were also then the People's Republic of Luhansk and Donetsk referendums for annexation by the Russian Federation.

I might now understand PRC China's interest in Taiwan and why its chairman is beggaring the population. The beggaring may be in order to keep incomes low and encourage manufacturing to return to China, however this is not good enough to help China's looming crisis. China faces future challenges with shipping lanes which cannot be resolved by seizing the seas near Japan and Taiwan. It also faces future challenges getting oil and important minerals. Because it has not been vaccinating its population it has been having massive shut downs to slow Covid 19 infections, and these have been ruinous to industry and commerce. Currently it is economically weak and is militarily not in terrific shape either.

I think Putin's game is about threatening nuclear war and getting someone to invade his land, but no one has. He's done everything but beg for someone to roll in with tanks. The only kind of war he is prepared for is a defensive war on his own territory, but he has failed to provoke enemies into attacking. Thus he has no opportunity to prove his military is still valid after such horrible defeats in Ukraine. Also the Russian people have been uninterested in his conscription program. They aren't under attack, so they object to the draft.

The annexations are a flimsy pretext to allow Putin to justify (only to his own lawyers) the use of nuclear weapons. The annexations are not recognized by the international community at large. The purpose of claiming annexation this early is to threaten us with nuclear war - a war that he would lose and quickly. The entire plan seems to be to goad someone into trying to invade Russia where he may actually have an ability to win a battle. Look at his pattern: move to a bunker, activate a draft, threaten nuclear war. He wants to fight on his turf. So he can win a war. He made the mistake of activating his draft before his people felt an actual threat, and also he was unable to hide from them how badly things were going in Ukraine.

By appointing friends to positions of power he has destroyed his military with graft. This has been demonstrated on the battlefield. Its reasonable to ask how many of Russia's nukes are even functional. Have they been kept clean and wires replaced regularly? I am not convinced of that anymore. This would sound far fetched were it not for the bizarre problems with the rest of his military.

No, we shouldn't. **** of Putin and his violent lusts and desires to extend his brutal dictatorship.
Amd why are you defending a violent tyrant who has a well established history of silencing dissenters through assassinations and disappearances?

The UN doesn't view Crimea as Russian. It doesn't view that annexation as valid.
This means, rightfully, Putin will throw a total ***** fit over Western agression against Russia but no one will be accepting it.

Sadly, no one will want to be first to lay down nuclear arms voluntarily.

And how many children died because of Putin's aggression? How many more will die because of it because that were brought forth by an elector and conducted with guns pointed at people are not free, fair, legit or valid.
You're second source seems to be a Putin apologist.
