Why do Chr-stians and non-Christians alike believe they will go to heaven when they die?

So many people believe that they will go to heaven when they die. You go to a funeral, and the relatives that come up to speak, or the preacher, will say that the person is in heaven now. I suppose it is easy to hear and comforting in a sense to believe that your loved ones are in heaven, but it's not the truth according to the Bible. And we should be men and women of truth. I believe the 10 commandments teach us this in the 9th commandment. Yet most people believe the Bible teaches that we go to heaven when we die. Even when reading the parable of the rich man and lazarus, it does not suggest that we go to heaven when we die as some assume. When we die, we are dead, and we rest there awaiting the resurrection. There is a first and second resurrection according to the Bible. The first resurrection is for when Yahshua our Savior returns and with it will be resurrected those who have died in the Messiah, or died in the faith (Revelation 20:6). The second resurrection is for after the 1,000 year Kingdom on this earth has ended and all the rest will be brought before the great, white throne judgment to be judged. At that time, there will be gnashing of teeth as the wicked is severed from the righteous and destroyed in Gehenna Fire.

Yahshua was different. He was not of this world, he was originally a heavenly being pre-existing with the Father. We are earthly beings. We were born on this earth and the scriptures tell us the meek shall inherit the earth, not heaven (Matthew 5:5).

Chr-stianity has really done a great deal of damage to the Bible by trying to comfort the masses. One can find comfort in the Bible. One does not need to invent ideas to make the message more palatable. If we die, we will rest in our lot and be resurrected. Those that are blessed to receive the first resurrection will rule in Yahweh's Kingdom on earth as kings and priests. The new Jerusalem will come forth out of heaven to this earth prepared for the people of Yahweh as we read in Revelation 21. You can also read 1 Corinthians 15 for some more information about the first resurrection.

It’s a fancy phrase for “I’ll be back here”

Heaven being... what exactly? A comfortable afterlife in the company of benevolent divine beings and reunification with lost loved ones? An illusory paradise where you blissfully relive your happiest memories? A post death awakening beyond the simulation to finally experience the truth? A climactic return to the origin of all that is?

Who knows. Eventually perhaps, that is up to God(s) and/ or the universe. I will do what I will to honor God(s) throughout this life regardless. That is who I am and who I choose to be.

If a happy afterlife ever did happen to someone like me, I would hope for a few cycles of rebirth before that, in this world or another, in this time or another.

And we should be men and women of truth.
I think that is too harsh by itself. I think people don't have a capacity to be truthful at all times or even to have perfect doctrines. We can try.
  • [Jas 3:1-2 RSV] 1 Let not many of you become teachers, my brethren, for you know that we who teach shall be judged with greater strictness. 2 For we all make many mistakes, and if any one makes no mistakes in what he says he is a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body also.
  • [Psa 85:10-11 RSV] 10 Steadfast love and faithfulness will meet; righteousness and peace will kiss each other. 11 Faithfulness will spring up from the ground, and righteousness will look down from the sky.
  • [1Co 13:1 RSV] 1 If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.
Yet most people believe the Bible teaches that we go to heaven when we die.
True, but it seems like a bigger problem than it is. We look on the outside, and we judge by words and by knowledge. Simultaneously we fail to see our inward selves. Our minds produce filth, confusion, panic and other distractions.

Chr-stianity has really done a great deal of damage to the Bible by trying to comfort the masses.
I think the real issue is that people have ears that itch to hear certain reassurances, and that always opens the path for a conqueror. Someone talented can manipulate it, and I think all people are vulnerable. How are you different from someone who believes in heaven? You like the afterlife. You like the idea that you'll be personally resurrected. You're the same to me. But I want to hear certain things, too. This is a vulnerability in people.

As you opened this up to non-Christians I believe the heaven-like astral plane is where we go when we die. My reason for that belief is my Vedic (Hindu) and Theosophical beliefs and from the Afterlife Evidence that includes things like Near Death Experiences that give glimpses.

It's the Biblical account as you presented it that I find rather challenging to believe.

No heaven or hell for me, not even birth or death. That is an illusion. I am eternal, the stuff of the universe, 'Brahman' in Hindu parlance. Nothing can even diminish me.

Yes. I don't believe in soul sleep.
And yes the New Jerusalem will come to Earth and we will not remain in heaven forever.

Do you believe you will go to heaven when you die?

perhaps trying to convince people they will go to hell has done damage to the Bible

perhaps trying to convince people they must “wait” in a grave for one of two alleged resurrections has done damage to the Bible

perhaps trying to convince people that Jesus is going to return has done damage to the Bible

perhaps ALL the man made doctrines have done damage to the Bible

perhaps people who have ALL the answers should maybe ask the Lord to open their eyes

just perhaps??

now, to answer your question: why would I have to wait to die to go to heaven?

just wondering

To me this question is at the moment impossible to answer. Why?
Because until i have reached the end of this life i will not know. I can only believe.

My belief that that there is an afterlife has nothing to do with the Bible. I am convinced, though of course none of us can be absolutely sure of that. My belief is based on the Writings of the Baha'i Faith. I have been a Baha'i for 51 years, and I do not see anything major to not believe in it now. I have been looking to see if it holds up all that time.

No. The mind, thst which is I will die. The atoms that make the flesh, bone, organs and fluids will follow the rule of the 1st law of thermodynamics and continue on to be reused. In this way we are all, to some extent made of dead people.

How can something that is living be made of something that is dead?

If you had said that everything which is alive now, has been alive in many different forms, I could have agreed.

You can't argue with the laws of thermodynamics unless you have a really profound observation.

We are all made from atoms, atoms are not living.

Why do you say atoms are not living?

And what do the laws of thermodynamics tell us about life and death?

Life is built on unliving atoms

In a closed system matter cannot be created or destroyed, only changed from one form to the other
