Rules regarding planes?

So my mom wants me to after getting my second vaccine shot to fly out to Los Angeles and see her...we haven't seen each other since I was 9. I've never been on a plane...I would like to know rules regarding planes in order to prepare myself. What to expect. I also want to know a little about LA if possible.

Expect some TSA goon to feel you up.
If I never fly again, it'll be too soon.

LAX is a big airport and LA in general has heavily congested traffic.
TSA are bozos and you'll have to take your shoes off, belts, necklaces, basically almost everything and you might as well take your clothes off because they'll be looking at you naked with their body scanner anyways. Make sure you review their website thoroughly for what you can and can't take aboard because if it's not approved they'll confiscate it or make you throw it away. You make it through that (I didn't make it through without being groped the last time), then you find your gate and it's more pleasant from there. Except planes are often cramped, and if you're around 6 feet or taller it may be uncomfortable. But it's fast and it's the safest way to travel. Though at LAX if you have any checked luggage you will be waiting awhile for it.
And LA itself is fun but overwhelming because it's so big. The metro area is actually numerous cities that are crunched together, with other cities and metropolises also within that large junglish cluster-mess of steel and concrete. And there is lot's to do, people are more laid back and accepting of differences, there is so much to see, and it can be a very thrilling visit. But it's also very expensive (LA and San Francisco are way more expensive than the rest of California), and there are a TON of people. That you may need to prepare yourself for. I struggled with my social anxieties when I first moved here because there are so many people here, and I don't even live in LA.

Oh, consider applying for the Trusted Traveler program.
Fingerprinting, background check, & an interview required.
It makes you eligible to have less security hassle.

I live in North Carolina
It's generally a lot cheaper to fly to Bakersfield, though if you do that you would have a lay over in probably Phoenix or Dallas. And Bakersfield is about an hour and a half drive north from LA. But it's an itty-bitty airport, and you'd have your luggage and be out the door within a few minutes of departing the plane.

It's stressful. Even if they don't stop you, there is the taking things off, loading them onto this tray thingy, going through the scanner, and then putting your stuff back on and back up, because you have to take out small electronic devices, you have to have liquids all fitting in a quart sized bag, it really does leave you kind of feeling like you're picking up the pieces after being violated.

That might change if you sit next to Bigfoot & his 2 year old terror.
One flight, I started watching Game of Thrones as it was on the in-flight thingy. And then Bigfoot and his two year old terror sat next to me.
He at least sat his son next to me, so none of us were overly cramped.
I kept watching Game of Thrones. I cared less about the two year old next to me seeing anything in it as the pain in my knees began setting in and worsening.

In my flying experience, Bigfoot Jr is upset
by something, & wails at top volume.

Travelling in European seems a real drag but from the posts above i will never gripe again.

Flown to/from Atlanta it wasn't much hassle, other than waiting for all the security checks to complete. Americans didn't have the same delays.

And JFK in New York, before 9/11 so there was no problems.

Last time I flew it wasn't a child but a young adult dickweed who kept putting his feet/shoes on the empty seats next to him and he was repeatedly told by the stewardess to put his mask back on and wear it right.

@Ray Warren on that note, if you have medal in your chest-pace maker, vns, etc you should get a card from your doctor. I have a neurostimulator so I can't go through medal detectors. I hold my hand over my chest when they wond. That's in federal government buildings but on flight, most likely sticker.
