But even children know that consequences really ought to be proportional -- and infinite punishment for finite choices are manifestly NOT proportional.
If a mistake made on earth sends you to hell... then who can escape it?
And how do you know when a choice is finite?
Aside from the fact hell isn't a place of eternal torment.
Yes, a life of corruption and moral depravity has it's consequences. You are free to act as you chose, you are not free from the consequences of those actions.

Of course, an infinite punishment for a finite crime is neither fair nor just; this is why God being fair and just would have one interpret eternal punishment in a figurative sense rather than literally.
According to mystic Emanuel Swedenborg, Matthew 25:46 should be interpreted as "all such therefore will be everlastingly tormented by the concupiscences of evil, but they who are in the good of charity, will have life from that good, because it is from the lord,who is the life itself."

Assuming you believe the Bible is the "word of god," that without exception everything in it has been sanctioned by him; in effect, what it says is what god has said, then one has to accept that hell is everlasting because:
Revelation 20:10
10 And he (the one who tricked these people) was thrown into the lake of burning sulfur with the beast and the false prophet. There they would be tortured day and night forever and ever.

“Then these evil people will go away to be punished forever.
Jude 7:7
7 just as Sodom and Gomorrah and the cities around them, since they in the same way as these indulged in gross immorality and went after strange flesh, are exhibited as an example in undergoing the punishment of eternal fire.

I think that once anyone enters into eternal separation from God they will have no question about whether it is fair. They will know it is and that they have only themselves to blame for rejecting the full forgiveness of sins and eternal life which was offered to all as a free gift.

Show me scripture where it says hell is a place filled with devil's with pitchforks tormenting people and we can talk, but if not you lose that argument.
Sure you are. Nobody forces people to rape, murder, kill etc. These are choices people make on their on. Unless a gun was held to their head forcing them to do these thing against their will, they willfully chose to do these things. Except in the case of mental illness, or other extenuating circumstances etc.

How do you define "fair"?
What if the punishment for a lifetime of mistakes was 1 second of suffering? Would that be fair? Is it only "fair" if the amount of time spent suffering is equal to the amount of time made making mistakes? Or the amount of time spent in a single lifetime?
But what about mistakes that cause many continued generations of people to suffer (perhaps suffering for all time) while the one who caused the mistake is dead and gone? If the living continue to suffer is it fair that the one who caused it not continue to suffer?

I assume then that we can dismiss as figurative other farfetched statements in the Bible such as Jonah living in the belly of the fish three days and three nights, or Jesus turning water into wine, or

All anybody would need to do is accept Jesus Christ as his/her personal Lord and Savior , then all of the Christian's sins are absolved by God; Jesus Christ's followers get freed from being Hell-bound.
