Richard Gere: Italians have changed

Bloomberg - Are you a robot?

Apparently, Gere is trying to help a ship full of refugees in the Mediterranean looking for a port that will accept them.

Italy’s Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini suggested Richard Gere fly 160 migrants stranded off the Italian coast back to Hollywood on his “private jet” after the actor made a plea to European leaders to find a port for the ship.

Gere joined representatives from the non-governmental organization Open Arms at a press conference on the Italian island of Lampedusa to appeal to take in the ship. Salvini has refused to allow the vessel into Italian waters, the latest episode highlighting Europe’s divisions over immigration.

“As the generous millionaire airs his demands about the fate of the Open Arms immigrants, we thank him: he will be able to bring everyone in his private jet to Hollywood and keep them in his villas,” Salvini said in a statement after Gere’s press conference.

Salvini has made a flagship policy of refusing to allow the migrant vessels, coming mostly from nearby North Africa, to enter Italian waters. Now in the first steps of a months-long electoral campaign, Salvini is likely to double down on the anti-immigrant rhetoric that’s made him Italy’s most popular politician for now.

The article said that Malta has agreed to accept 39 of the migrants, but other countries are refusing.

Colonialism is the only solution.

...The West must seize and colonize the lands from where migrants come. The sooner this process begins the better.

Are there any ways people can popularize and shine a bright light on colonialism? Are there any positive examples in history we can use to make people see colonialism in a positive light?

Personally, I'm very much for colonizing Central and South America. I want jungle safari vacations in the Amazon so badly. And I want to play with the monkeys.

Yes....your take? If you don't mind me asking?:)

I never really got into any of Richard Gere's films, so I don't have much of an opinion of the guy either way.

I don't know if there are any parallels between the migrant/refugee situation in Europe as opposed to America. We have refugees trying to get into the United States, along with trying to find shelters for them as they wait for their asylum claims to be processed.

I don't see a problem with people like Gere trying to help out people who are in this kind of international legal limbo. Regardless of their status, they still need food, shelter, medical care, and other basic necessities of life.

I don't think Salvini's suggestion that Gere take them all to Hollywood would really work either, since Trump may also refuse them access to the United States. So, it looks like they'll be stuck for a while.

If we can't bring them here, then the West could go to them! Bring the jobs and the economy to them!

(And have fun doing it)

This is Ghana, where many migrants come for Italy... It's beautiful... A prospective vacationers paradise!

...Think for a minute how colonizing this area might profit both the people of the land as well as investors.

Senegal is another place from where migrants depart from to Italy... They have elephants, giraffes, and also a beautiful landscape, ripe for colonization.

You Americans elected a President in 2008 who unleashed conflicts throughout the Mediterranean area and allowed the destruction of Libya, the wealthiest country in Northern Africa and Italy's ally.

Since then Italy has spent billions of euros annually to face an overwhelming migrant crisis.
Not to mention the huge economic losses as for the trades between Libya and Italy.

WWMRD?
So Richard Gere wants Italy to accept immigrants that would threaten to harm (probably rape) a woman's children unless she allowed them to rape her? Sure, come on in you are all welcome...

Well, it wasn't just due to the president we elected in 2008, but I get your general point here.

It's not all due to America either. The region itself has been unstable and in a perpetual state of conflict for decades, if not centuries.

I'll concede that America hasn't made things any better, and perhaps we'd all be better off if we stayed out of these endless conflicts. But we've gotten stuck in some kind of quagmire. Even Trump doesn't seem willing to pull us out of this mess.

The only reason that Obama joined NATO to stop Gadaffi was because Libyan refugees were pouring into Italy.

Refugee populations are a problem.. whether they are 6 million displaced Syrians or European Jews.

I think multiculturalism is destructive. Because it is the political correctness that Convinced many Americans to elect a president who was probably someone who wanted to destroy the Western Civilization.

Gaddafi was a gentleman and our ally. Period.

Creators of chaos that pretend to be heroes of chaos ~ ruin the lives of many who were surviving and living just fine in their land, and then try and open up the floodgates for some bad apples to create more chaos in established areas. Paint all sorts of false pictures of areas and leaders like in Libya, Syria in order to blame. Do not agree with this ~ and you are a racist, a horrible human, and whatever other stupid labels that wind up morons.

LOLOL.. I used to live across from the US embassy in Tripoli.. Gaddafi was NOT a gentleman or an ally. He was nuts.

Obama didn't get involved until all the embassies had shut down, all the oil companies had pulled out and Libyan refugees were pouring into Italy.
