"Authenticity" or "Being True to You" -- What Does the Idea Mean to You?

So I'm curious (which is the main reason I was standing outside your window last night looking in. I'm curious. But that's another story), I'm curious what you think of authenticity, or being true to you? Any and all ideas welcome. Just want to understand your views, not debate them.

See you later on tonight!

I am I, no one else, the authentic me.

I don't see how anyone can be other than themselves unless there is some degree of dissociative identity disorder or they are playing to the crowd.

It means that after you climb up to my window and peek in, I push you off, cut the rope on your safety harness, and drop a large potted plant on you. See you tonight!

Safety harness??? True Scotsmen cant be doing with safety harnesses

Could it be that everyone (except for the occasional Poe) is authentic,
& that some people mistakenly find others inauthentic due to failure
to grok the others? It's a way to make the other the problem, eh.

Methinks it must take a lot of effort and a bloody good memory to be someone else. But i do often think, sheesh, is he/she real?

On a long defunct forum, I was The Pope.
Another identity can become comfortable & familiar.

We have a pope here.

And i guess that even as the pope you were no one else but you. A read headed, haggis eating, jock, simsons fan and scrap iron collector?

I took the job seriously....but improved his sense of humor.

I recall there was endless speculation about which poster was
The Pope. Several were proffered, but no one suspected me at all.

I think you need to find out who you are first and try to avoid trying to live upto any ideal of what other people think you ought to be.

For me that amounts to discovering what actually makes me happy. It's not like deciding what is going to make me happy. It's identifying those moments in my life that I was actually happy and understanding what caused them.
