"Authenticity" or "Being True to You" -- What Does the Idea Mean to You?

So I'm curious (which is the main reason I was standing outside your window last night looking in. I'm curious. But that's another story), I'm curious what you think of authenticity, or being true to you? Any and all ideas welcome. Just want to understand your views, not debate them.

See you later on tonight!

Well, I have tried to be authentically me, but gave that up. Now I am trying to be authentically Jason Momoa. The only problem is that I have 'dad' body now.

I think most people have a sense of what is right, a code, principles.

Our principles are constantly tested - especially when nobody is watching.
Every action we choose which is counter to our principles increases self loathing.
Every action we choose which is according to our principles increases self esteem.
So what is at stake is worth more than our reputation or our job.

Nobody else is keeping that tally for you. Nobody else really knows the devil’s bargains you need to negotiate. You are on your own.

And you will hate yourself if you get it wrong, no matter what you appear to gain.

Being of the Zen persuasion, I'm going with mindfulness. {This would then make me of dubious authenticity in any given moment. :( }

Oh! The Mystic's dilemma! It's almost as frustrating as the Centipede's Dilemma!

My own religion
Being a skeptic; check my own thinking and feelings/emotions and try to be a better me (authenticity as a variant of existentialism and some applied version of that some emotions can be changed cognitively)
As for morality - we are all equal as humans and different as individuals and try to accept the "other".

Being oneself is the most beautiful thing anyone can be.

.....Was the window thing a Melissa Etheridge reference?

I do not think I am one to put on an
act, I have instead to guard against
self indulgence, just doing what I feel
like doing.
Still, early in our relationship my boyfriend
said, "You do not have to try so hard."
followed by
"Just be yourself."

I'm confused how it is possible to NOT be authentic. Even if you are playing a role, it is *you* playing the role, right? So you are authentically an actor at that point.

No matter where you are and what you do, you are still you.

I think it's just a matter of being "real," as some people might say. Some people have a certain "salesman" persona, where they smile and put out the glad hand - yet one gets a distinct sense that they're being false and disingenuous.

Many people hide their true selves behind a certain public face which is false.

I equate "authenticity" to sincerity, and I do not think anything is 'Being True' to me.

Just be thankful that yours reach the ground.
Were they even one inch shorter....

Yes, that, and I dont think they even make
clothes for sub micro petite.

So embarrassing, when I want to go outside!

Even in NYC a sub compact girl who seems
to have nothing to wear, floating an inch off
the ground, THAT would get attention.

Authenticity? If unique = authentic, I'd be
that!

It means that after you climb up to my window and peek in, I push you off, cut the rope on your safety harness, and drop a large potted plant on you. See you tonight!

I don't see a problem with un-authenticity here on RF.
But there are troubled posters who challenge the authenticity
of others. It seems that they just cannot accept that another
would disagree with their obvious Truth. It offends them.
These naysayers must be dishonest or "intellectually dishonest",
which is the sanitized philosophical sounding insult.

I know I can be one of them, but I try to spot it and don't fall for the temptation of being Right.

Real Christians, yes. They are like real haggis eaters,
hard to identify.
