Outlawing chess because it "promotes gambling" is like outlawing zippers because they "promote sex". If you're looking hard enough for excuses to outlaw things, you'll never find anything that's wholly innocent.

Says you. But you were the one advocating banning pants because they promoted abstinence.

Saudi Arabia’s grand mufti has ruled that chess is forbidden in Islam, saying it encourages gambling and is a waste of time.
Do you think this is excessive fanaticism? or do you support this?
Peace be on you.
Seeing there, at least 17 pieces of cigarette-ends, and art-work on table, one thinks, they talked against specific way of chess which is in use there [associated with gambling etc].

===========================================
On the other side, chess can be played as healthy activity:
""The theme of 42nd National Ijtema was the ‘Purpose of the advent of the Promised Messiah’. Events across the weekend saw Ahmadi Muslims compete in recitation of the Holy Quran, poetry and speech competitions, cricket, football, volleyball and various other sports.

A new addition this year was the Discovery Marquee where 24 talks were held on a range of subjects, whilst an on-site library allowed attendees to study books and an Indoor Games Marquee allowed the youths to play table tennis, chess and other games in an informal environment.
An exhibition on the history of Islam was also enjoyed by many.""

Gambling, bet are forbiden in Islam, they are considered as big sins. Saudi Arabia is a wahhabi country. Saudi Arabia Mufti's decisions belong to himself. Islam encourages people to pass their time by doing good things. People must do usefull things. If somebody prefer to play chess instead of to occupy with their children's problem etc. It is not suggested by Islam. If you play football instead of to do an important work Islam says you first finish your important Works and you can play football in your free time. You will understand my friends

It is just that it takes such a stretch of imagination to guess what could possibly be harmful in chess that one can't help but find it funny.

Just try to picture those gangs of no-good chess players shouting "Mate" at each other without concern for honest citizens; roaming the streets scaring passers-by as they carry their boards to their meeting places, unsuspected by the authorities that care for law and order.

Or something.

Whatever social challenges and concerns Saudi Arabia might face.... I just don't think chess has much of anything to do with them. Or else it must be a very dignified society, if even its troublemakers like to play chess.

So, do you advocate that football be forbidden as well?

no, please read my comment correctly, if you go to a football match instead of to see your child professor or if you pay your last Money to a football match instead of to buy bread for your home Islam suggest you to see/do the important one. It is not matter to forbid.

So do you agree with forbidding chess, or do you only agree that chess should be played in your spare time and not when you have more important things to do?

No chess? NO CHESS? Truly this is the religion of the vilest of evils!

Just kidding.

I just think it's odd more than anything. Like they're running low on their list of 'Things about the West we can Forbid.'
