Christian Apologetics

What is the point of Christian Apologetics? Is it to win arguements, insult people, repeat misinformation until they are blue in the face or to try and convert people?

Are Christian Apologists anything like the forum Apologists or real life apologists?

I don't know what Christian Apologetics is. I looked it up once but I don't get it. Can you give a definition of
1.Christian Apologetics
2. forum Apologists
3. real life apologists

Am I one, two or three of those?

Or none of them I'm hoping. They're bad. Right?

Well the CARM the christian apologetics site says this

CARM is a 501(c)3, non-profit, Christian ministry dedicated to the glory of the Lord Jesus Christ and the promotion and defense of the Christian Gospel, doctrine, and theology. To do this, CARM analyzes religious and non-religious movements and compares them to the Bible. We examine abortion, atheism, evolution, Islam, Jehovah's Witnesses, Mormonism, relativism, Roman Catholicism, Wicca, universalism, (and much more), along with Christian preachers and teachers. In all our analyses we use the Bible as the final standard of truth in order to defend and promote Christianity.

All instances I have seen and heard though seem to be less about defending/promoting and more about just insulting people, trying to make them look like an idiot and guil them.

If you are on twitter look me up @ladyballsblog to see what kind of apologetics Ive been responding to on there.

Anytime one engages in debate in an attempt to defends ones faith in something, you are engaging in Apologetics. All it means is to defend ones beliefs via discourse.

There isn't really a point to it, it's really, if we want to be honest about it, a bunch of people who want to pretend that their silly beliefs can be rationally justified. You'll find very quickly that it's just not true and people like Matt Slick of CARM are about the least credible apologists around. These are not people who are proving that their faith is true, they are people who are making excuses for why they believe ridiculous stuff.

Ive been tweet in a kind of tweet war with self proclaimed apologists. One guy says the same lines over and over to different people. He is always going on about homo sex and how he is rational but atheists are not. Theory cant be trusted etc. Starting to think he is a bot or a self hating gay.

As a Catholic and an apologist when I can be bothered... I have two real goals. The first is to show why the reasoning used to attack my faith is (more often) fallacious or (sometimes) non-compelling. The second is to clear up the misinformation and deliberate lies against my faith.

Or... as SF succinctly quoted: to explain and defend the faith.

I would just ignore him.

"Christian" apologetics in the case you refer to is simply an attempt to give some veneer of respectability to outright lies. It is important to understand that evangelical apologists often know that they are lying. These are not rank and file believers, most of whom probably have genuine doubt and humility in their beliefs and practices, but guardians of the flock. They are educated, even articulate defenders of their beliefs, but they shouldn't be confused with good faith interlocutors. Certainly, I think that there are evangelicals who are not bad faith participants in interfaith dialogue and transmission of the gospel, but experience and reason tells me that evangelical apologists are a breed apart.

When you are responding to the apologists and their lies, what you should always keep in mind is that your words are not meant for them. You will never convince someone who knows in their core that they are promoting a falsehood. The best you can do is to write persuasively, without vitriol, for a hypothetical bystander, a person of good faith.

Apologetics is a valid endeaver. From Wikipedia:

Apologetics (from Greek ἀπολογία, "speaking in defense") is the discipline of defending a position (often religious) through the systematic use of information.

Apologetics themselves can be both smart and dumb.:)

Usually I would, but I cannot resist responding to tweets where he spreads misinformation about homosexuality and homosexuals. Doesn't sit right with me.

You have to remember that these people are not interested in truth or fact, only in their irrational beliefs. You cannot debate with them, you cannot reason with them, you cannot win against them because they couldn't care less what anyone says, they only care about the absurd things going around and around in their heads.

Debating with fanatics is a waste of time.

It is supposedly aimed to defend the truths of the christian faith and explain it to those who aren't believers yet. It's a way of evangelism.

Christian apologetics has been hijacked to a large degree by the US Christian right. Instead of the brilliant and sagacious apologetics that can be found throughout the history of Christianity, as great minds discuss and debate deep theological questions - what we have now are often painfully disengenuous charlatans using the guise of apologetics to attack science for political gain.

The apologetics of Eusebius are avastly superior endeavor than is the blunt fraud of Lee Strobel and the infantile fantasy world of the likes of Ken Ham, Ray Comfort, Duane Gish et al.

A noble academic persuit has been reduced to a grotesque sham.

There's no personal vendetta against Christianity, it's against irrationality. Maybe Christians and other theists would do well to stop being irrational.

Listen, if you can rationalize the unexplainable, more specifically, like the experiences we were talking about with son in another post, be my guest. Until then, lets keep an open mind.
