Residents of Latta, S.C., are raising questions about the sudden firing of the town’s first female and openly gay police chief.

Latta Mayor Earl Bullard fired Police Chief Crystal Moore after giving her seven reprimands in a single day, which a member of the city council says is more reprimands than Crystal received during her 20 years with the police department. ”I looked at the reasons, some of them are questionable,” Brian Mason, a Latta council member, told WBTW.

The majority of the states in the union don't have any laws on the books to prevent this. So basically your boss can fire you for being gay. Whether this is the real reason this officer was fired remains to be seen. Information suggest she had a good work record for the past 20 years and at some point audio surfaced where it alleges the mayor can be heard saying he would rather a person with a drinking problem babysit his kids than a person with a "questionable lifestyle"....

So here are my two questions.

Do you think it's right that someone can be fired for being gay?

If states don't preclude employers from firing people for simply being gay then should employers also be allowed to fire a person for being straight?

Sad stuff. It will be awhile yet, unfortunately. When it's just a few it's tolerable, but when it's commonplace, it's not understandable.

Mayor Earl appears to be strangely obsessed with Police Chief Crystal's sex life. Maybe he should have taken a cold shower or two before issuing reprimands.
