Are people born inherently atheist?

Well of course. You can have a child grow up to believe anything if you constantly ingrain it into their brain from an early age. The same goes for Santa Claus, the Tooth Fairy, the Sandman, etc.

That's right.

You came into this conversation partway through. Your posts give me the impression that you aren't up to speed on what Kilgore and I are talking about.

The question got the answer it deserved. Again, redefining newborns as something other than newborns may be a useful tactic for arguing that newborns can be theists, but this conversation is about newborns.

Actually, it didn't.

I have put forth a much more intellectual answer.

All anyone is defining them as is people, which they are.

Newborns are a subset of people in general. Any discussion about people in general is relevant in a discussion about newborns.

Until you can explicitly define the set "theists" (which would mean at the very least, according to you, a consistent definition of "god"), then you cannot determine whether infants are theists or not.

atheism is like answering "what is some of your favorite foods?"
With "I have never ate a burrito"

Sorry, you guys post too fast in this thread for me to track, so I've dug out an older comment. But I liked it. It made me laugh.

I think atheism is more like answering "What is the best food in the world" with "A spicy tomale" even though you have only eaten a small percentage of the worlds foods.

Glad somebody read it lol

Goofy way of saying - Atheism is not a positive indication of anything, it points to no solid parts of a world view, just the absence of one belief - thoughtful consideration or not.

This reminds me of the "if atheism is a religion" jokes.

...If atheism is a religion, then not collecting stamps is a hobby.
... If atheism is a religion, then off is a TV channel
...If atheism is a religion, then abstinence is a sex position.
... If atheism is a religion, then bald is a hair color.
I'm sorry... I just couldn't resist. :)

Please stop attributing things to me that I didn't say. In this case, you've managed to claim that my position is the exact opposite to what it really is.

I know you freak out at the suggestion that you might be doing this on purpose, so I'll assume it's accidental and say this: it seems that you're misunderstanding things somewhere, so it would be best if don't assume that you understand what I'm saying.

The question got the answer it deserved.

As I said, if you weren't going to answer it, it would have been best not to waste time posting something.

Well, when you find someone trying to redefine newborns, you'll have something to say to them. Until then, you might want to keep your comments relevant.

A statement that posits a way the world is is positive. If atheists are something, then atheism is something that defines them. If an "absence of a belief" doesn't posit a way the world is, atheism is a fail. If atheism is nothing, then there are no atheists.

If you remove all the theists from the world everybody left are "not theists" and the prefix a- means "not" so saying they are "not theists" is the same as saying they are atheists. What would you say defines all these "not theists" besides all being "not theists"?

Why do "not" things need a name, Artie? We don't have a name for all "not" things, why would some be special?

Doesn't it make more sense that we give atheism a name because it's something?
