The Burning of Quran – A Modern Act of Barbarism

...And why should I not bash other religions when people are trying to portray Muslims as nothing but throat-slitting extremists?...
Then what makes you different from the people who bash Islam, except that you are Muslim and bashing a different religion? If religion-bashing is an excuse for religion-bashing, why not make things more efficient and just bash yourself and your own religion? Cut out the middle-man, so to speak. :areyoucra

Muslims need to come to terms with the fact that muslim taboos do not apply to non-muslims. When non-muslims burn a quran, they are not burning a holy book!

Yea....and if someone shouts abuse or spits at anothers mother...that's cool because she's not your mother and means nothing to you?:sarcastic

I think the bottom line is that no-one has a right to not be offended.
Rather, everyone has the right to their own opinion and the right to express that opinion in a peaceful non-violent manner.
If that opinion offends someone, tough.

Welcome to the modern international multicultural society. ;)

I can't really see why this is supposed to be the bottom line in this thread. Were the thread's OP talking about Muslims overreacting, or violently reacting or what have you towards certain criticism?

No, it wasn't. That was a point raised by others. Which has been addressed. Now, if there is a bottom line to reach it should be concerned directly with the OP.

The reason i don't think this is directly concerned with the OP is because it seems to me to be assuming that Muslims are okay with violent reactions, or over reactions, which supposedly makes this necessary to be said, rather than criticize the incident mentioned by the OP.

The OP is rather vague as to what the topic is supposed to be about except that he/she considers the burning of the Quran to be an act of barbarism.
And while we agree that burning books in general is a stupid form of expression, it -is- an expression of free speech, and while we consider it to be moronic, it is on that we should accept without turning to violence.

The reason i don't think this is directly concerned with the OP is because it seems to me to be assuming that Muslims are okay with violent reactions, or over reactions, which supposedly makes this necessary to be said, rather than criticize the incident mentioned by the OP.

I did not mention Muslims in my post as far as I can see.

There are many things that people get offended by that does not include burning holy books, some of which has been mentioned in this tread, including the burning of flags, destruction of monuments and the "hanging" of dolls of politicians, all of which not only could, but I assume are, intended to offend.
And even so, we must keep in mind that no matter how much we treasure these items, they are still just things.
That's all.

Terrible analogy. Whens the last time you heard of someone getting Hepatitis or HIV from burning a book.

Ones intent is to **** people off, the other is assault.

Feeling old at 26 is indicative that you are doing something wrong. You should have tons of energy as you are entering the prime of your life. That said, at 26, you are little more than a child to me. :)

Well, I don't literally feel " old " at 26... I am just down about pushing 30. I do have tons of energy though, as I love playing Basketball, and have tons of " wind " / stamina. Anywai, my dad is 53 year old so I suppose I am more like a child to you... heh... =)

I'm against any sort of book-burning, Qur'an included. Then again, I'm also against ancient south Pacific Hindu temples and Bactrian Buddha statues being destroyed as well. I'm basically against the eradication of great cultural achievements, period.

What happened to respect and tolerance of other religions as we are taught in Islam? Are you above that?

Yeah, I am above that. Unlike you, I know Allah exists. You're merely a " believer ". If I were to tell you my story of " Heaven on Earth " it would blow your wig off. It deals with Allah, Fox News Girls and many other things. BUT... I am not going to tell it yet, as I like these forums, and would rather not get into a huge debate with haters/doubters who will call me delusional out of pure envy/jealousy and try and drive me off these forums.

Proof of this?

Why don't you google it ? Pretty easy to do.

I'm sure you would love to know how I know Allah exists. It will come in time. Anywai, I can't wait till my Fox News girls swoop me up someday, and we take pictures together, so I can put them on my Facebook and send all the haters/doubters to the Hall of Shame.

Unsupported claims are fun aren't they? You seem to enjoy them. How about sharing your "knowledge" with the lot. I mean, unless it is just another unsupported claim....which I'm sure is the case.

Yeah, I am above that.

You're above Allah's commands to tolerate other faiths? Please read what Allah thinks of pride and arrogance:

“I shall turn away from My revelations those who show pride in the world wrongfully.” (7.146)

“Certainly He does not love the proud ones.” (16:23)

And in this way Allah does put a seal on every arrogant disdainful heart.” (40.35)

Many Ahadith also speak poorly about arrogance.

Isn't a "believer" one who knows Allah exists? Are you for real? Either post your story or we can't take anything you say seriously. I most certainly AM NOT jealous, and I don't wear wigs. :p

Would it be ok if all the Qur'an burners just did it it secret and didn't tell anybody? That way everybody that hates the Qur'an could release their pent up anger, and since Muslims would not know about it they would suffer no ill effects.

No thanks. I refuse to share atm. I don't have much time left on the internet, as the school year is coming to an end, and I won't have access anymore. Perhaps when I get out of this place and get my own comp/internet I will share. Until then, I will leave you waiting.

I was a very vain person before I had this revelation. I mean, really vain. I would always be in the mirror looking at myself and saying " Damn! I'm one sexsay guy! And, well, I'll just leave it at that. Not even going to go into what my opinions were of other people. I always kept them to myself though. Just thoughts that stayed in my head.

Only guys would envy my story as it deals with them drop dead sexy Fox News Girlz who just can't get enough of my cuteself. Ha Ha Ha!!!!:flirt:!!!!

I have a question. Much like Quran burning some Afghani locals I knew who were very good at Arabic Calligraphy wrote the shahada on some paper and gave it to me as a gift. Upon folding the paper they kinda scolded me for folding it. Apparently, I learned that crumbling paper or folding anything with the name of Allah in it is bad. Have you heard anything like that?

My 2c on this one. My avatar is not just one of the greatest a*ses around, it's a bikini designed by Australian designed Lisa Blue. It shows the hindu goddess Lakshmi and in my mind, is pretty cool.

Portions of the hindu population didn't think so. Apparently using Lakshmi's image in such a seualised manner is incredibly offensive to their beliefs. They showed their dissaproval, not by writing strongly worded letters to the editor but by rioting in the streets and burning Australian flags. bear in mind this is Lakshmi, who the Oxofrd dictionary of Mythology describes as "Lotus-eyed, lotus-coloured, and decked with lotus garlands, she stands as the symbol of maternal benevolence, her full breasts the constant source of succor and delight."

Lisa Blue pulled the bikini from sale and apologised, wrongly in my view.

So my avatar is a representation of what I believe is one of the more stupid aspects of religion: your ridiculous attachment to symbols, under which I include books.

The more stock a religion puts on objects, the more vulnerable they are to attack. Who cares if someone burns a bible or a quaran? It's just a book. In your belief structure that person is going to hell anyway, so why get angry?

If your faith is SO fragile that this makes any difference to your world then you need to examine the strength of your beliefs.

I agree with your observation, Pillsongchurch, but the problem is not just with religion. People get outraged at the destruction of political symbols as well--e.g. the burning of flags. The symbol does not necessarily have to be religious in order for people to riot over its destruction. The point is that violent, obsessive behavior over the destruction of a symbol is not just a stupid aspect of religion. It is a stupid aspect of human behavior.
