Sexism in the workplace

This is going to sound pretty pathetic, even downright homosexual, but I don't care. I am a man, and I absolutely love my new long hairstyle. My hair defines me; it shows my rebellious and unruly nature. It shows how I am unafraid to step outside of conformity. It is an artistic representation of who I am as a person. And yet, after filling out my job application and meeting with the human resources manager for my interview, she had told me that I am a sound candidate for the shipping and receiving specialist, except for the fact that my hair length is in violation of company dress code and must get it cut. I have a problem with this; women get to wear their hair as long as they like. No questions asked. I, however, can not. Why?
Simply because I am a man. My gender. Does anyone else out there think this is sexist like I do? How can one tell me this isn't sexist? One hundered years ago, women wouldn't get away with wearing pants instead of a dress unless hell froze over, but, unfortunately, here we are in the 21st century and we still have the same kind of discrimination taking place. Men's freedom in the workplace is being targeted; both sexes should have the same rights, but obviously this isn't the case. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

with all those lesbians out there the length of a persons hair is almost the only thing to distinguish men from women (raise your hand if you ever called a dude, mis or a woman, sir)

"raises hand"

I usually call them by their name, but maybe that's just me(?).

Question: Don't men generally still make more money than women do for the same jobs?
Gee, women must make LESS than minimum wage then, because that's all I've ever gotten.

But come, folks, not a single one of you are taking this thread seriously. Call me a dirty hippy if you want. Fine. I'm a dirty hippie. But this is AMERICA. I can be a dirty hippie IF I DARN WELL WANT TO BE. I guess people in this thread either:

A. Don't care about equality

-or-

B. Are too stupid to understand what equality REALLY means

The statistic is that women are paid 73% that of men (from what I recall). However, It depends. A general explanation for this is that men are more willing to negotiate for a higher pay, while women tend to be more accepting... a result of social conditioning.

Also, discrimination manifests itself in many other ways. For example, men's work is evaluted better than women's (even by other women), and women's professional advancement is often halted by a "glass ceiling."

Or "C", your complaining about conforming to a dress code as synonymous with the struggles women have had to go through within the work force is frankly pathetic. Even insulting. When you're making 64.8% of comparably educated males in sales related jobs, or 53.7% in financial positons due to your hair then you'll have a point. There's no comparison. When you've faced wage discrimination, difficult work conditions and even physical threats because of your hair then start a new post and I'll take you seriously. But nothing you've stated is remotely "sexist" or discriminatory. Get a haircut, buy a suit and get to work. Or don't. I have to have my hair its natural color, remove my piercing, hide my tattoos, and dress appropriately at my job. Nothing sexist about that at all.

I'm still wondering how your OP comes across as "downright homosexual" but I'll assume you had some special meaning you and only you were aware of.
And while I do find it rather pathetic that your hair defines you- but who am I to condemn a shallow adherence to an irrelevant aesthetic preference?- I'm more curious as to how you could possibly consider your OP as anything other than mock-worthy.

And maybe that's because you refuse to cut your hair in order to advance in your job.

I once had a co-worker suggest I would go further in my job if I would grow my hair out to look more feminine.

So, I went home and shaved it all off. It was wonderful.

The sweet thing was, that within a month I was promoted and my "helpful" co-worker was fired.

Just wanted to point out that the point of my question was to show you that you really don't care about equality at all. If you did, you would be fighting for equal pay for women as hard as you're fighting to keep your long hair. Gender equality means nothing to you. The only thing that does is getting your own way and using "gender equality" as a means to get that way.

People have to change things to advance in their jobs. It's the way the world works. I have to hide my tattoos. If I didn't, I wouldn't be where I am today. I'd still be working at a nonsense job, making minimum wage and complaining that the world won't let me be me. If you can't do that, then you need to stop complaining and realize that the problem is your's, not society's.
