The Federation includes favorable alliances with the Kzinti, Vulcans and Gorn. However, the Empire would find a willing ally in the Klingons and Romulans, I suspect, whereas the ragtag group of rebels wouldn't add much to the fight against the Empire.

Heresy! What could Capt. Kirk possibly do to defeat Lord Vader? He can't shoot him, as Vader is strong with the force and has an indestructible glove. He can't charge in for a close range fight, for he will either be choked to death, or diced to pieces by a lightsaber.
