It may be wondered why the words "Sufi", which means "woollen-clothed" and "Tasawwuf" which means "the path of the Sufis," i.e., the woollen-clothed
ones, should have become so universal in order to denote something which belongs properly to the realm of the spirit. This name is symbolic rather than descriptive. To be a Sufi does not require a person to literally wear woollen clothes, but presumes an inner quality which was at one time characteristic of those who wore them.

Yes, he did........ or at least, the people who wrote the Laws did.
Every law written in the Old Testament (for example) was all about increasing, security, cohesion, health, strength and successfulness of the Israelite people.

    For example.............
If everybody looked and dressed in recognisable dress then outsiders would soon be sussed out, I think.

Many religious believe that no one is more special than anyone else. By everyone dressing the same, everyone seems uniform and equal.

Some uniforms denote rank in a church. Others serve a function. For example, the flying nun's habit keeps her aloft (by the force of habit, of course).

I see a great deal of hierarchy in the Abrahamic religions.

Don't you think in a modern society that the costumes look quite silly and outdated ?

In case of Hinduism and Buddhism, the color selected was the one which hides dirt, because the monks may not be able to wash it with soap every day (natural surfactants used at that time - Reetha, seeds of Sapindus mukorossi). So, it was shades of ochre (Bhagwa).

In Hinduism, it is the staff, which shows the hierarchy, color of the dress does not.

Four most important monks of India (Shankaracharyas of Dwarika (oldest, first among the equals, the tall one), Badrinath, Puri and Kamakoti Sharadapeeth (they are supposed to always carry their staff with them, it is the symbol of their authority).

In fairness, religions are just gangs trying to outdo each other with silly hats contest.

(Please note this post is in jest.)

Yes and no. If you refer to Christianity then there are no colors to be worn, regardless
of what some Christian Pharisees think with their ornate costumes.
But what you wear IS important as it says something about your character - if you want
to be better than others, or worse than others, or follow some shallow fashion, then
what you wear says it all.

    Not just clothing...
Circumcision is quite the gang sign...*nods*.

At least, it was for a while there.

My self given title here is Grand Hat. That comes from a drunken conversation where a friend and I started plotting our revolution. Halfway through we figured it would be smarter to make it a cult than a political coup, and we'd use hat sizes to denote rank. That type of approach seemed to work for the Orthodox and Catholic churches...ahem...

They just want to be noticed. They would have otherwise no-chance to be noticed just because of what they say only. Obviously. You need to add appearance and colour, when you have otherwise nothing with any rational contents to say.

A bit like that shaman that invaded Capitol Hill a few months ago. Who would even remember him if he did not wear such a ridiculous attire?

    Ciao

There are uniforms for a great many things in life. Wearing a uniform means that, for the time being, you are less an individual and more part of a team, set aside for a certain purpose. It's why waitresses wear set clothing. It's why soldiers wear set clothing. And its why i.e. Catholic priests where set clothing.

There is nothing at all about the wearing of uniforms that makes it analogous to gang colors. Your mockery simply doesn't make sense.
