The reason to go to church is to learn to commune with people you disagree with, to find opportunities to help others, to see yourself through other's eyes, to learn patience, to learn obedience, to learn kindness and ultimately to learn love. As a human being you will have a lot of rough edges and things to learn over a lifetime. For human beings personal growth is a team effort. You cannot reach your zenith without the help of others. Jesus taught that to follow him requires denying yourself and carrying your own cross, which is figurative language. It means you must become a part instead of the whole, and its not something you can do alone. You must learn to put up with other people and you need them to do the same, and you have to all share the goals that Jesus envisioned. Jesus goals are very lofty, obtainable, but they require some work and suffering. Church is a lot of work, and if you are only attending some meetings then you've never been to church.
