Who's Planning On Seeing Avatar?

I haven't seen it yet, but I suspect the 3D these days is more subtle. Move makers aren't trying to show off the technology - they're just adding a visual layer to the film.
Notify me when you have seen it. I would be interested in knowing what you thought about it.

its a great looking movie, very pretty.

but thats pretty much it, the story is aweful & the acting isnt much better. plus a blue alien version of sigourney weaver, trying to look sexy, ick.

but it is very very good looking lol, just dont expect more than that

I can't believe some people thought that the acting and story in Avatar was horrible.

I think it is the best movie I have ever seen. We saw it in IMAX 3D, which I would also recommend. Very cool.

The mix of messages in the movie was what made the story so captivating. It made me think of Ferngully. lol. It also made me think of the horrible treatment that Native Americans endured. It also focuses on corporate/human power and greed. I loved how the movie captured human nature in such a strong and deep portrayal. It depicts in such an insightful way, how people so easily justify the destruction of raw beauty and innocence with no desire to even acknowledge thier own ignorance or ego.

I know lots of other movies do this as well, but I think this movie did it the best.

Yeah, we are, unfortunately, forced to compare Avatar to that horrible trash that is Ferngully.

I'll take it further: it's the only one that did it well. All the others ranged from horrible to mediocre at best.

Oh whatever! LOL! I thought Ferngully was cool when I was a kid.

Avatar took the same message about respecting, preserving, and loving nature, and delivered it better. Better than any other movie.

I agree...We saw it yesterday in 3d.I loved the movie.I loved the visuals and I loved the story.I thought of native Americans as well too.

The only complaint I would have is some of the fight scenes went on too long for me.But Im the type that will take a bathroom break during car chase scenes and stuff so my critisism is obviously personal preference.I get bored quickly with long battle scenes.

Anyway I wanted to jump inside the screne and live there with them in the trees.I also loved the places in society that women held.

Saw it Saturday.

I loved it. The charges of "Dances With Wolves In Space" are not without merit, but I thought it was well done. And it was sooooooooooo pretty!

I enjoyed the plot and the visual were stunning. The 3D wasn't as in your face as in other movies, but was subtle and was used just to make the visuals more stunning and not as a gimmick which is a plus in my view.

Yeah, someone upthread said the CGI was bad. I don't get that at ALL. It was gorgeous.

Me and my wife drove to Indy this past weekend to see it in IMAX 3D...

IT WAS FRAKING AWESOME!

That was me. :D I didn't say the CGI was bad, just that it wasn't as good as I'd expect from a movie that took this long to make and had as much advanced technology as it did. I'm hoping to go see it tomorrow, so I'll have a full take on it after that.

Well, I just saw it. It was better than I expected. I think it still had some problems, and the story was somewhat lacking. The visuals were a lot better than expected, though. What I'm surprised at is that the visuals in all of the trailers I saw were, IMO, subpar, and those parts were in subpar in the movie, too. But there were plenty of other parts that looked really, really good. I wonder why they didn't use some of them in the trailers instead.

The story wasn't as cheesy as I expected, but it did seem to assume you knew what was coming, and just went with it. It at least held up enough that the visuals make up for it. My biggest problem with the story is the end. I think there should be more resolution. The final battle ends, and then there's about 5 minutes of clean-up time. I wish he had spent more time tying things up rather than ending it so abruptly.

All in all: 3 out of 5 stars

I saw it. Had a problem with the 3D and screen so they had to stop the movie in the middle, most of us took a bathroom break.....and we watched the rest.....even got FREE movie vouchers for whatever movie we want to see in the future.

OK....Here's my take on it. The CGI was decent. The special effects and colors were nice.

What I didn't like was the 3D. I didn't see it in any sort of 3D IMAX just regular 3D on a flat screen.

3D WAS NOT NEEDED FOR THIS MOVIE. IMO there was very little that appeared to be 3D. A lot of background, when you removed the glasses, you could tell it was 3D but foreground didn't appear to be in 3D. Because of that and using the glasses it dimmed the vibrant colors of the characters.

I'm sorry to rant on about that but I just really had a bad experience with that and was expecting MORE. I Live here in VA and over the break went to Busch Gardens in Williamsburg and they have some sort of haunted castle ride in 3D and that was far better. Even when I went to Disney World, they had a small theater with a 10 to 15 minute 3D show that was way better than Avatar 3D.

OK...OK...Enough of that rant...Now onto the plot. Without giving away spoilers.....:).....The story itself was nothing new.....The classic back yard bully movie. Really it was like.....American Native Indians meet the white man (Circa 1600's).....

I'm with Watchmen on this one......

A - visuals (minus the crappy 3D)
C - Story (Basically a Native American/Colonial Settlers rehashed) on a different planet and technology

B - Overall....

Is it worth paying to see it. YES just not in 3D or for full price. Go to a matinee.

3D in movies today isn't used like an amusement park ride. It's not about things coming at you - it's about adding depth to the visuals, which it did.

When you removed the glasses most of it was just blurred. The 3D for this is like those eye puzzles where if you stare at them the right way, you see a picture stand out seemingly in front of the background. The 3D here made certain things seem closer than others just to add depth to the shot.

I don't think it was perfect, but I think it worked overall pretty well.

I saw it at a matinee in 3D. I would recommend seeing it in 3D just to get the experience. Of course, it also costs more in 3D.

It's just a differing of opinion here is all. For me the 3D was not needed. Yes there was some depth here and there but 3D in the movie theaters, at least for, didn't do much for me. For me it actually took away from the movie experience. Now if it was like an amusement park movie in 3D...Oh...baby....I'd be camped out for my ticket.

ok...ok....Maybe it could have been where I was sitting. It was packed in there. I was at the top row. I think what I'll do is in a wek or so...when the hype has calmed down...I'll go back and get that perfect seat...I normally go in and hunt for...(the one in the middle row..in the middle of the theater) and watch it again....I know...sounds geeky...but I did like the movie and don't have a problem paying to see it once more to get a better perspective of the 3D....:)
