What is the Hindu position on sex outside of marriage and contraception?

Thanks for that Wannabe Yogi, and yes, but the Dalai Lama only speaks for Tibetan Buddhism. The Buddha taught to have sex within a commited partnership, not necessarily marriage

You probably aren't familiar with the Five Noble Precepts. Every Buddhist is required to take five oaths:

1) Thou shalt not kill.
2) Thou shalt not steal.
3) Thou shalt not engage in sexual misconduct.
4) Thou shalt not lie.
5) Thou shalt not get intoxicated.

Those are NOT the principles of a morally relativistic belief system. Western Buddhism is NOT the same as Buddhism in Asia.

Friend ZooGirl,

What is the Hindu position on sex outside of marriage and contraception?
would Hindus look down upon premarital sex
Yes, premarital sex is highly discouraged. But it isn't a grave sin nor does it make you a bad person.
The Kama Sutra is not a scripture but a text on sex and how to enjoy it.

Personal understanding:

Sanatan Dharama does not bind anyone with RULES.
It only shows what is what, the choice is individual's.
There is nothing as good/bad, right/wrong except that if you do this this is what happens about desires driving thoughts to actions and then a cycle continues it also shows the way to transcend that very desire but using that same energy for enlightenment.
Friend XXXXXXX though not married has experienced sex [her own admission] does not make her a bad person and she knows that the desire till overcomed/transcended will keep her away from merging with her Krishna.
We all know and friend WannabeYogi has mentioned that KAMASUTRA has been developed to enjoy sex which life itself offers.
Also. as someone mentioned there is a form a TANTRA practice which uses sex energy to merge with that universal energy but without EJACULATION.
The choice is yours to uplift the self as a spirit and live with the gods in heaven or remain attached with the desires of the body and animal instincts and live in hell.

Love & rgds
