Turning America into a socialist hell.

Joe the Plumber, Bob the Banker, Barack Obama, "socialist hell" | Salon

Considering the current debt, and McCain's history of saying the very wealthiest should pay a little bit more in taxes, do you think things will be much different under these two candidates? Thetwo sides are starting to get so hateful to each other and throw the word "socialism" around, but seriously.....do you think there will be a drastic difference between these guys? When it comes to this issue alone - taxes - is it really worth the fight?

McCain's tax plan will help to increase the gap in wealth between rich and poor, while Obama's tax plan will help to narrow the gap in wealth between rich and poor. But neither candidate is a radical on taxes.

That's what I thought. So I am not the only one. I just see so many bumper stickers/signs etc. indicating that you won't have any money left when Obama takes office. Ugh.

That sounds like a scare tactic to me..

Something tells me that if we as Americans were to receive real socialism with all of it's benefits, including universal healthcare and free college, we wouldn't have much to complain about. The problem is the fear-tactics that have been used to slander the meaning of socialism by the people interested in keeping the capitalistic system firmly in place. FDR's New Deal policies were a form of socialism, and nobody can complain about the benefits of Social Security today for our elders. The policies in Alaska which give each resident within the state a share of the oil profits is another example of socialism which would be quite popular if implemented on a nation-wide scale. We must imbrace the benefits of socialism, rather then hold tightly to capitalism and then complain when it fails to give us what it is not designed to. The capitalist system is set up to protect profits and spread them among shareholders rather then Americans as a whole. With capitalism, you are not going to see free college nor universal healthcare. It is anathema to the cause of the almighty profit chartboard...

The Devil's Advocate
I'm tired of the word "socialist" being used as an epithet. Somehow this country has got it in its mind that democracy and capitalism are linked, and that any move towards greater socialism is a move towards totalitarianism. Not so. Look at Canada and Western Europe.

Socialism carried to an extreme is harmful, yes. But so is capitalism carried to an extreme. Our "democracy" is currently owned by the very rich.

And no, there isn't a lot of difference between the Dems and the GOP on this. While John McCain owns seven houses, John Edwards (the so-called populist) enjoys $400 haircuts, which he then writes off as "campaign expenses."

What is with people utilizing socialism like bathroom soap? We had a Fair chairman who was buddy buddy with Ayn Rand and politicians who list Hayek and Friedman as inspirations...

UnityNow and lilithu - I agree! It seems like people actually link the word "socialism" to "evil" or "unfair". It has become a dirty word and I don't think most people even understand what it even means. The more I understand it the more I think jeez....I think might be a socialist.

Once you realize all economic actions are interrelated, some large myths get blown into the water.

What are the differences between capitalism and socialism?
how would you define each?
Can you give examples?

You do realize there are many different types of economic systems aside from american capitalism and russian collectivism, right?

Do you believe the above two are in any way special, or a cut above the rest?
How many other countries use a federal reserve?
Is banking in the U.K. Nationalized?

Please answer as many questions as you can. I'm curious about this.

Zippyinthehead,

You do realize that everything that you would define as socialism is not Communism? Is some socialism such as social security alright by you, while everything you disagree with is demonized by labelling it Communism? The tactics of those that are only interested in keeping the current social and economic structure in place is comical, to say the least. If you do not know the difference between socialist ideas which benefit all of us, and the strong-arm control of the State as defined by Communist regimes, then you should really just stay silent on the topic...

The family unit is technically a socialist collective. Resources are pooled together and shared.

So is freeware. And piracy. And cooperatives. Socialism isn't just how the government acts.
