In the interest of fairness, the mayor has asked for 2 millions one-time fundin surplus to the police, other agencies and community outreach organism to stem gun violence in Portland (which remains a one of the least violent major city of the US). So the approach to the problem isn't purely a repressive one through the use of the police as one might imply by your comment.

In my opinion, what is needed to stem problems of gun violence is significantly ramping up gun control at the federal level since local legislation are ineffective. Plus, it would kinda help your neighbours with their problems of gun violence. Canadian gangsters arm themselves largelly in the US through a mix of legal and illegal way. Even Mexican and Central American criminals often end up being armed by US weapons since they are so abundant.

I keep hearing on RF how the left is better
educated & more tolerant, & less violent.
But when they get angry.....
The extremists on both sides are a problem. And one of the main reasons that there was no Blue Wave when it came to Congress is due to people realizing that there were too many crazies on the far left.

You're so balanced.
That is not allowed on RF !!!

Better to loot the rich who have more than they can spend (and who'se good are often insurred against theft) than the poors who already struggle like how the rich do.
Insurance companies simply shift the financial burden. And it is the average person that ends up paying.

Well, they also loot stores owned by ordinary non-wealthy folk.
But they're angry....if you didn't want your business looted &
burned, you shouldn't have put it in their way.

There aren't that many mom and pop shop these days and from the news I got, during the last wave of protest it was mostly big chain stores like Macy's, Targets, some dollar stores and some McDonalds (and two or three police station) that were destroyed.

Of course the rich are far better thieves. When they can robbed and rob back the poor to make it up for it. There is a reason the rich are rich. They are the best thieves there is. They even make their favored form of theft a largely legal or one where it's very hard to get caught and condamned for.

Small stores & beauty salons were looted too.
But burning & looting big stores still harms us all.
And in the inner cities, it causes them to leave,
which creates shopping deserts.

It's that kind of class warfare thinking (which ignores the individual
in favor of demonizing all in a group) that leads to so much violence.

This is not a gun violence issue.

Tell that to those who suffer under an oppressive system. There will always be poor, miserable people who are overworked and overstressed under our type of economical system and they are counted by the hundreds of thousands. Small time criminality is nothing compared to systemic violence. No society ever saw any significant improvement of its living condition through the reduction of criminality by the use of police force and judicial ruling. Society improved through mass action to transform economical and political systems. That's how capitalism was born, that's how democracy was born, that's how socialism and the wellfare State was born.
