The War on Christmas

Twilight Hue

Twilight, not bright nor dark, good nor bad.
Yes, there is a war on Xmas.

Anything you want to know specifically?
Yes. How does it effect those who think so?
It's not like Christians are forbidden to celebrate it or anything like that. It's really a made up "war".

Just because public used institutions are now more geared toward neutrality does not signify any war of any sort.

People can still celebrate it and display it freely at their homes and places of worship.

Don't understand this type of thinking that there is a "war".

Businesses are afraid to use the word Christmas in their advertising for fear of offending someone. Soon all we will hear is "Happy mid-winter non-religious celebration to you." It might not be a war on Christmas but it is taking the holiday away from Christians in order to not offend non-Christians.
Nonsense, nothing is being taken away from Christians

You make "Christian" sound like someone with the ego of a sixth grader who is too emotionally or psychologically weak to tolerate other people having mid-winter holidays along with his own.

Doesn't this depend on where a person starts in belief regarding the nature of the day? If someone sees the proper framing of the day to be religious (regardless of the historical accuracy), then a secularization (or a reaction to the sensitivities of other religions) would appear to be a war, undercutting the foundation of the day. But if one sees it as a generic (and ever more non-denominational/secular) day of happiness in the winter time, then the commercialization and removal of religious iconography to be replaced with mass market figures puts it in line with any other holiday built around family and gift giving (not necessarily in that order).

So the war only manifests if you believe that there is something to defend.

According to the SCOTUS decisions on this, religious symbols need not be removed as long as the public facility includes other religious and/or secular symbols as well.

Is there a war on Christmas? No, but one could say that there has been a misguided attempt to be all inclusive that has now led to not celebrating anything or only celebrating a scrubbed, commercialized version of a celebration. The 'recognize all celebrations and faiths or recognize none' is by default the attempt to stop recognition of any as there is no way to recognize all.

So you think the war on Christmas is limited to public buildings then?

Christmas is in one's heart. It's isn't anything external that anyone can wage a war on. I understand the whole idea of the war on Christmas, but Christmas begins in the heart.

Uh, no. Government institutions cannot play favorites, but anyone else, even private businesses, can do what they like. Also, if you keep Christmas as a religious holiday who cares what businesses do? Do you see people of other religions in a tissy because they arent greeted with Happy Chanukah or another religious greeting at the entrance of Wal-Mart? No. There is no attack of any kind upon Christmas. The sheer thought is ludicrous.

No, not at all. It's in businesses and our schools as well.
Christians have been so used to the favoritism that Christmas has received, largely due to its secularization, that now they seem to think that their holiday deserves that special treatment. Start taking away the special treatment and actually being more fair and equal minded to all religions and suddenly Christians think their holiday is under some sort of attack. It isn't. It never had been. You simply aren't catered to and coddled anymore and treated like the favorite child.

This x 1000. So well put, Draka.
I'm Christian but truly how people 'treat' Christmas, doesn't make it or break it for me...not sure why people care so much as to how a secular society 'honors' Christmas. Many people don't honor Christmas in the way I do, anyway...so what? Many treat it like a pagan holiday. Many treat it like a religious holiday. I think you nailed it with your comment. :)

Well...schools are public buildings, at least in many cases. I'd doubt that ones you're taking issue with are privately owned.
As for businesses...have you considered that they might be reflecting consumer opinion, rather than running to any particular agenda? That doesn't sound anything like a 'war' to me.

When people start bombing nativity scenes and lighting decorated trees on fire and arresting people for saying "Merry Christmas" I may actually entertain the idea of a possible "war" upon Christmas. Until then...poppycock.
