The US government can't even use money to research why mass murders happen.

Ok, bullets are bad for your with health. I didn't need the CDC to tell me that. What kind of answers are you looking for that could they possible supply?
That's already been explained to you. If we knew it all, they wouldn't study it. And we don't know it all. The greatest mark of a fool is to think we (or the person them self) know everything and has nothing else to learn.
Fortunately, science does not ascribe to such a mentality and it will study even things we assume to be true because they are so ingrained into our culture as true.

Science studies things. And often enough, it discovers what we think is true is totally not true, it reveals to us things we hadn't considered before, and sometimes it doesn't give us much. But what doesn't make since is leaving these unstudied areas unstudied.

[/QUOTE]
That would be true if these areas were acrually unstudied. The problem here is that our government and society isn't applying what they (should have) learned.

You mean your trick question that is unanswerable? "What would the CDC tell us about gun ownership that we don't already know"? Was that the question you are referring to?

Not a trick question. I realize you don't k ow what they could tell us without them tackling the question. But you must have some idea of the info your looking for from the CDC? Or why else would you ask them?

I would ask them because we don't already know everything about gun ownership (or anything for that matter), so they should keep researching the subject and doing studies. Your question is a trick because obviously we don't know what we don't know. I am not even sure what the CDC is studying right now, but I am glad that they are looking our for our security.

Why wouldn't you want the CDC to investigate gun ownership? All it would be is more information. How could that hurt? Or, are you simply scared that more information would lead more people to see guns as too much of a threat to our security?

I wouldn't ask the CDC to investigate gun violence anymore than I would ask my gunsmith to investigate disease research. I just don't think the CDC has any answers to offer.

But, the CDC specializes in security threats. It isn't just an agency that specializes in health and wellness. Are you just hung up on the name "center for disease control"? Because, I admit, the name is misleading, but the CDC does a lot more than just health and wellness.

I'm sure they do. But they specialize in diseases etc. So it's not my first choice to investigate something not disease related. Maybe they could study the psychological part of a mass shooter. But that's as far as I would allow them to investigate.

The big thing they need to investigate is suicide deaths by gun. Fits right in with health and wellness and is the highest category of gun deaths.

You ARE hung up on the name. The CDC specializes in security threats as well (not just diseases), which certainly includes gun violence. They aren't just specialists in diseases.

Not hung up on the name. I just rely on facts.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention - Wikipedia

Nowhere listed is it say anything about security. Aside from infectious diseases/disease spreading organisms.

An exert:

Its main goal is to protect public health and safety through the control and prevention of disease, injury, and disability in the US and internationally. The CDC focuses national attention on developing and applying disease control and prevention.

As you can see the CDC specializes in diseases, and is the whole purpose of the agency. They have no business investigating anything to do with gun ownership.

You are dead wrong. Here is proof (from the CDC website):
"As the nation's health protection agency, CDC saves lives and protects people from health, safety, and security threats."\
CDC Works 24/7

CDC is the nation's health protection agency, working 24/7 to protect America from health and safety threats, both foreign and domestic. CDC increases the health security of our nation.

Not security as in physical protection. But security as in health security, i.e diseases etc.

You are reaching buddy, and you are dead wrong. All you have to do is check out their website. You will see information on various physical safety concerns.

They specialize in everything from fire safety and hurricane cleanup to safety concerns regarding weapons (especially firearms).

In addition, it clearly says "safety threats", referring specifically to physical security threats.

So there are suspected mental illnesses that may be prone to gun violence vs other types of violence?

How could you protect an outdoor event from long distance gun fire?

Drug use makes you more apt to use a gun for violence?
none of those questions will be answered under the Dickey Amendment.

You can't be sure of that. The Dickey Amendment blocks the CDC from using government money to investigate any thing that could possibly promote gun regulations. If the CDC was freely able to look into Drug use and gun violence, mental illness and gun violence or protecting outdoor activities from gun violence with full access to government funds they could find ways to resolve or reduce all of those.

The govt will not be able to help with any of those issues under the Dickey Amendment. The NRA lobbies very hard against any kind of regulatory action whatsoever. The only thing I have seen happen is adding more guns to the situation. I could offer a barbaric option to help change their minds but I will just try and forget I even thought of it.

All the Dickey amendment is a law that prevents the CDC from using Federal Money when any of its investigations could possibly imply gun control as the out come.

As worded in the amendment "none of the funds made available for injury prevention and control at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) may be used to advocate or promote gun control" Wikipedia.

CDC's Job "CDC works 24/7 to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S." From CDC.gov website.

Repealing the Dickey amendment allow's the CDC to do its job and yes it is still up to the government to follow through. Enough facts do change people's minds example Cigarettes.
