The US government can't even use money to research why mass murders happen.

Its called the Dickey Amendment. It prevents the CDC from using money on research that could advocate or promote gun control.

Write or Call your congressmen to appeal the amendment. See John Oliver below.

I am familiar with this segment. The NRA is a political pest that is standing in the way of potential progress. It is too bad, really.

So what could the Center for Disease Control tell us about gun ownership that we don't already know?

Not about gun ownership all but any research that could promote or advocate gun control. It is so vague that any research that has a part of a gun in it is blocked. So trying to research specific mental illness's that may be prone to gun violence and no cash from the federal government. Researching ways to protect outdoor events from gun rifling and you get no money from the federal government. Researching drug usage and gun violence no money sorry.

So there are suspected mental illnesses that may be prone to gun violence vs other types of violence?

How could you protect an outdoor event from long distance gun fire?

Drug use makes you more apt to use a gun for violence?

It would be nice to know, but the because of groups like the NRA the federal government can't fund such research.

This is a huge problem that many, many congressmen on both sides of the aisle have attempted to do away with. John Oliver does a great job explaining it in the clip too. Thanks for sharing.

The NRA does not care if the insane, criminals and terrorists get guns. The might make some hypocritical noises but when it comes to taking action, they worship at the alter of the sacred gun and want everyone to have semi-automatic weapons (easily converted to fully automatic) and silencers. Guess who really wants and will use such weapons: the insane, criminals and terrorists.

The Dickey amendment doesn't prevent the CDC from conducting research on gun violence.

It does prevent the CDC from advocating gun control. So they can do the research, they just can't use the research themselves to advocate gun control.

They could certainly provide the research to others to advocate for gun control. So why aren't they?

Without watching the video, it sounds like good policy to prevent the CDC from political advocacy.

No thats a lie, the CDC is denied Federal funding for any research that could advocate or promote gun control. I has nothing to do with preventing them doing anything it just denies them funding.

If we don't already know, how could he answer your question? You literally asked him a trick question ... come on.

Ok I'll reframe it. So what do you think the CDC could tell us that we don't already know?

Twilight Hue

Twilight, not bright nor dark, good nor bad.
With a little research we could probably find out some of the reasons.
That would be worth the time and effort rather than the incessant thinking it's guns themselves that are the core problem as opposed to what mentally puts people over the edge.

It seems like it's this generation that has this kind of problem. Gun laws were always the same, or even more lax in the past.

This generation of people is the most psychotic and mentally challenged I've ever seen.

I would love to know why.

It's not political advocacy they are aiming for, but their recommendations can easily be viewed as political advocacy (as no doubt a study that doesn't paint a flattering way would be interpreted by many).

Sorry, have you actually read the amendment?

"Act, to carry out the National Center for Health Statistics surveys: Provided further, That none of the funds made available for injury prevention and control at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention may be used to advocate or promote gun control:"

That's all it says. It's doesn't deny funding. Congress may choose not to provide funding for the research but this amendment doesn't prevent that.

Here, if you want to look through and find it for yourself. It's kind of a long document....

Actually they've been much more strict in the past, such as the "Wild West" days when people did not have the guns Hollywood and pop-culture authors lead us to believe, it was illegal to carry them in many places, and ill advised to carry them in many legal cities (viewed as an indication you are looking/asking for trouble).
