Our country was founded on individuality, not community, like Europe. We like our space. We were influenced by the Protestant Work Ethic and I think it definitely limits us. We should be open to other types of society.

We are free here to try other types.
But they must be voluntary associations, unlike countrywide imposed socialism.

The real appeal is that someone else will pay.

Someone else doesn't pay because we all pay. That is what is appealing about it. Everyone from the super wealthy to the poor chip in, and everyone benefits.

more than they can afford, & expect that they'll get what they want
without having to work any harder, ie, those who earn/have more will pay.

You risk painting all socialism fans with that broad brush.
