Australian Woman Wakes up With New 'Irish Accent' Days After Surgery

Australian Angie Yen has been speaking with a new Irish accent for two weeks in what's suspected to be a case of foreign accent syndrome.

Yen, aged 27, is originally from Taiwan but has lived in Brisbane, Australia, since she was eight years old, and normally speaks with an Australian accent. But two weeks ago, Yen woke up sounding Irish, despite having never even been to Ireland.

Yen first started speaking with an Irish accent 10 days after she had surgery to remove her tonsils. She went to the hospital the same day but as she wasn't showing any other signs of illness, Yen was sent home and told to rest.

Still looking for answers, Yen said she will be doing an MRI and a blood test soon and is looking for a neurologist who can help her.

Yen has been documenting her journey with her new accent on TikTok, where she has gained a following of more than 20,000 people. She went viral with a video documenting the second day of speaking with an Irish accent that was viewed nearly two million times.

In the video, Yen says: "I woke up with an Irish accent and I've never been to Ireland before. I spent the whole day yesterday freaking out about why this is happening to me and I went to the hospital and I also called my specialist and asked them why this is happening and they couldn't provide any answers. They just told me to sit tight and let the body heal up after my tonsil surgery last Monday about nine to 10 days ago.

Foreign accent syndrome?

Massive structural fracture in I-40 bridge over Mississippi will close it indefinitely (yahoo.com)

I've driven over this bridge a few times before.

The Hernando de Soto Bridge carrying Interstate 40 over the Mississippi River between Arkansas and Tennessee at Memphis has been closed indefinitely due to a crack in one of its main support beams. Officials said Thursday that the crack could take "months" to repair.

The closure will force road traffic to detour over the Memphis-Arkansas Bridge approximately two miles to the south. River traffic has been halted temporarily while crews assess the safety of passing beneath the damaged structure. Road crews were poised to remove any cars that crash or otherwise become stuck on the four-lane I-55 bridge. The next nearest Mississippi River crossings are about 60 miles to the south near Lula, Mississippi, and 100 miles to the north near Dyersburg, Tennessee.

Barges have also been delayed, so this could also delay river traffic on the Mississippi.

Inspectors were working to determine if the I-40 bridge could hold its own weight and the weight of construction crews, said Paul Degges, chief engineer for the Tennessee transportation department. Barge traffic will not resume until engineers decide that the bridge can stand on its own, he said.

The U.S. Coast Guard said 16 tug boats hauling more than 220 barges were waiting in line Wednesday. At least four tugs attached to barges sat idle Wednesday near a boat ramp at Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park, about 20 miles (32 kilometers) north of the bridge.

Ever since that bridge collapse in Minnesota, I've had slight fear of crossing bridges. I wouldn't like the idea of a bridge collapsing under me.

When I crossed the Tappan Zee Bridge several years ago, I opened up all the windows in my car, so I could leap out quickly at a moment's notice and try to swim to shore (in case the bridge collapsed and I plunged into the river). I heard that bridge was a disaster waiting to happen, but now I understand they've built a new bridge.
