The concept of "life energy"

Thats nice nice but, why are you posting these googled entropy lessons to me .. learned that stuff in my Chemistry Degree .. "Physical Chemistry" -- a difficult class for sure .. weeds the mathamatician from the artist .. but what you know about this force that appears to violate the laws of Chaos and Order .. and what do you know about the ancient creation stories .. Genesis and Enuma Elish --- about the battle between chaos and order - the separation of the salt water from the sweet .. the land from the sea .. google us something regarding these events .. help us discover the concept of life energy .. and tell us why it violates the laws of Entropy .. and how such and ordered felow such as yourself .. could spring up out of such chaos . via the life force .. :)
I am saying the life energy is connected to entropy. However in the free energy equation; G=H-TS, the TS or temperature; T in degrees Kelvin times entropy; S, has the units of energy. Entropy by itself is not energy. However, since the human body maintains constant temperature at 98.6F, changes in entropy tweak free energy. When neurons segregate sodium and potassium ions the entropy lowers with the release of energy connected to the lowering of ionic entropy.

Going against the 2nd law, increase in entropy, can be done but it takes work and/or the expenditure of energy. The neuron is up to the task, using 90% of her energy to create this unstable situation. However, she is like Sisyphus who rolls the large round stone, up the hill only to have to roll back down; neuron fires. This hill is not an activation energy hill, connected to changes in enthalpy, that you can overcome and roll down the other side. Entropy has to increase and going against it, it only temporary, until it rolls backwards.

I can make neither head nor tail of this, I'm afraid. But I note you are trying to evade my point that entropy always increases in a spontaneous process.

There is no need for any additional hypothesis, whether "orgone energy" or anything else, to account for processes going "against entropy", since that never occurs.
The neuron pumping and exchanging of ions at the neuron membrane are deliberate processes and are not spontaneous processes. I can deliberately freeze liquid water to make ice cubes with a loss of entropy. But that will take electricity and my machine will increase entropy; heat loss, for a net gain of system entropy. However, now since I have made ice, that is a like a reservoir of lowered entropy, that will need to increase. I can use it on my drink.

Neurons pump and exchange sodium and potassium ions, for their low entropy reservoir, because these two ions extend the hydrogen bonding range of water; amplify and reduce, getting the water involved in storage. Sodium ions in water are kosmotropic meaning it creates more order in water than pure water creates for itself. Potassium ions are the opposite or chaotropic, creating more disorder in pure water than water creates for itself. The potassium concentrates on the inside and adds disorder to the water; higher entropy. This is needed to overcome pure water overpacking the protein. Potassium, via the water, looses up the protein so they more reactive; adds entropy and complexity.

The outside sodium ions cause water to become more ordered. The outside of the neuron has an enhanced lowered entropic potential that includes the water by virtue of its contact with sodium. Increased entropy occurs by attracting a wide variety of food materials to the cell, which enter the cells through transport protein; selective lock and key.

Because potassium creates chaos in water it has a smaller hydration sphere of water, while sodium by creating order in water has a more extended hydration sphere. This makes the smaller sodium ions bigger if you include the hydration sphere. Potassium is larger as an ion, but if we include the smaller hydration sphere, it is now smaller than sodium plus hydration sphere. Potassium can leak out of the membrane attempting to lower its concentration gradient; type of partial entropy increase. This move extra positive charge; K+, out, setting what is called the membrane potential; outside positive and inside negative. The sodium is too big and is selectively filtered out. We end up with a serval layers of entropic potential and gradients, and some induced enthalpy potential; charge gradient.

When neurons fire to increase entropy, by reversing the ionic segregation gradient, the sodium and potassium reverse or swap. This temporarily creates. more order in the inside cellular water. Memory can be created inside the neuron in sturdy microtubule structures. After the neuron catches up, the chaos of potassium is restored making these microtubule surfaces more active trying to increase their entropy.

The outside of the neuron now sees more potassium ions which increases the exterior water entropy. This can clear out the clutter of food molecules and also set up vectors for further entropy increase; firing cascade. When the cell catches up, the outside structures stabilize and food comes back. All this activity needed for brain and consciousness is driven by entropic potential; life energy and life force to use old timer descriptions of the modern concept of the entropy layering.

Thank you .. an excellent response and summary of point and argument. So Yes .. when we add energy .. we can turn the entropy clock backwards ... go against Gravity .. create order out of the Chaos. And this much the ancients realized .... Worshiping the Sun makes complete sense .. as this force is the giver of life .. grower of crops .. giving warmth in a cold universe. One of the mistakes in Perspective of the creation and Adam and Eve stories is that the battle is not so much about Good and Evil as it is to bring order from the Chaos .. to subdue the Chaos monster .. Tiamat if you are looking for a name .. this then the identity of the Snake in the Garden .. or the God .. depending how you look at things .. but I digress

Cause and effect .. can identify the source energy .. The Sun in this case, by which we are able to reverse the forces of entropy .. and bring order out of the Chaos.

Great -- but I am not talking about that energy... as the life force .. although I do grant that that is definitly a life force energy that one could call God .. but it is just one life force energy then .. there are others that we can see .. Order arising out of the Chaos - where we can not identify the source .. hence the term "Ghost in the Machine" .. but there is definitly something there operating .. that we can't account for.. and you have books written about certain aspects of this phenominon .. by apt titles such as "Chaos Theory" .. and lesser known classics such as "Dancing with the Wu Lie Masters" - "Mysticysm and the new Physics" was another good one I read as a youth - then when you get into the Quantum realm .. things get even more strange but leave that aside for the moment

There is a motive force .. outside of the realm of our understanding thusfar -- pushing against Entropy -- and it shows up in many places.

I will give one interesting example from work/research areas -- being chemist and microbiological specialist - and alternative remediation technology expert --- cleaning up contaminated soil and groundwater by getting bacteria to eat the hydrocarbons .. these little creatures being experts in thwarting the forces of entropy .. using catalysts to lower that energy barrier needed to break a bond .. but that is all chemistry/microbio stuff that we know the energy source and can calculate.

What happens though .. particularly important in microbiological corrosion -- of which I am also an expert .. are what we call "Consortial Events" these are things catalysed by the entire community ... as opposed to the activity and reactions of single bacteria. One is these consortial activities you would be familiar with is when you snot up when you get a cold .. that is the consortial defense mechanism of your good bacteria .. creating "Slime - EPS - Extra Cellular Polysaccariodal substances". Now if the bad bacteria win this battle .. the slime gets out of control .. lungs fill up with fluid and you die of Pnemonia. Not the Cold virus nor the Covid Virus that kills folks .. 9 out of 10 times it is losing the bacterial war .. dying of pnemonia. 1 out of 10 the virus does something wierd and you have a heart attack or some such thing.

Now this consortia -- if you put water in a glass -- glass/glass not plastic so that the sun shines through .. put in nutrients .. you will grow bacteria which will stratify from anaerobic at the bottom to aerobic at the top after a few weeks. Now if you stick a wire in the top and the bottom .. you will be able to power a 2 volt light .. welcome to the world of "Bio-electricity" - can Google Derek Lovely for Research articles.

This process is extremly irritating for those trying to prevent corrosion ... this called MIC .. Microbiologically influenced corrosion.. other mechanisms via production of acid and other thigns play a roll .. but it is this ability to procide an electric current that is so funky. and now consider that for every human cell you have 9 bacterial cells .. that you are a home for microbes who have a whole lot to do with your evolution and survival .. a symbiotic relationship you have for life.

Now in these communities .. we have something called quorum sensing .. and you have to remember that these communities .. while interconnected .. the individual bacteria are very far away from each other... and yet at times .. for protection of the whole or for other things .. electrochemical signals will be sent out where by the whole community acts together to accomplish some goal -- "biofilm production" as you can hear described by this gal on the internet. quorum sensing in bacteria - Google Search

Now imagine the first thought -- the blob exists .. and is now aware of its existence .. or at least aware of something - like the electrochemical cell that is created by the bacterial community .. this force is outside of any of the individuals .. yet somehow this "Thought" gets manifested into physical reality.

You think it is nothign to will your finger to move .. and behold it does .. but this is a really big deal when nothing but a thought exists ,, how does this blob manage .. through force of will .. to create a thought that makes something happen in physical reality. ,,, this is one of those "We don't know" but it happened questions .. and because it happened there is obviously some force behind this incredibly structured and ordered event in this mass of random chaos.

The main way life creates order from chaos is through the interaction of water and organics. If we mix water and oil we can form an emulsion, which is like a pseudo solution of tiny water and oil droplets. If we wait, these droplets will combine, with their own kind, until we have two ordered layers of liquid; order from chaos. This simple water-oil affect; the drive segregate water and organics into compartments, made the formation of organic life easier.

Water is held together with hydrogen bonds, with each water molecule able to hydrogen bond with up to four neighbors. In that respect water is to secondary bonding what carbon is the covalent binding; both can bond with four neighbors. Hydrogen bonding is one of the strongest secondary bonding forces, binding all the water molecules together. This gives the small water molecule a very high boiling point for something so small. If we compare the boiling points of CH4, NH3, H2O, and HF, which all have the same molecular weight, we get (100 oC), hydrogen fluoride (20 oC), ammonia (-33 oC), methane (-162 oC). HF and NH3 can both form hydrogen bonds, but not up to four at a time like water. The 3-D water matrix is very stable.

When we add the oil to water and shake or stir, we are adding energy to break up that very stable 3-D order within the water. However, since hydrogen bonding of water is so stabilizing, once we stop adding energy, the water will try reverse this and exclude the oil from the matrix, segregating both the water and oil to maximize its own stability.

The term hydrophobic is a misnomer since organics are not afraid of water. Methane is soluble in water at low concentrations. The real push is the water is more of a snob and prefers its own company, since its 3-D hydrogen bonding matrix is much more stabilizing in terms of secondary bonding forces. An important part of this stabilizing effect, in liquid water, is connected to the entropy increase that the matrix allows within the hydrogen bonding hydrogen.

Once the 3-D matrix of water is set up the hydrogen are no longer stuck being connected to any single oxygen; pH affect. The average water molecule with very specific hydrogen and oxygen atoms, lasts a tiny fraction of a second due to hydrogen proton entropy; mobility, When we mix water and oil, although this looks chaotic with respect to the macro solution of droplets; higher entropy, we have actually lowered the entropy of the hydrogen of water, due to the hydrogen mobility restrictions created by the bonding implicit of surface tension. The push to increase entropy via the water requires the water lower the surface tension, expelling the oil from its 3-D space. The entropy of the hydrogen of water is useful to life in many ways; signally, moving information in 3-D, storing entropic potential, etc.

This water-oil affect is what makes water unique for the state called life. If we used an organic solvent, you will not get the extreme water-oil affect to create order from chaos. Instead, once mixed they will stay in solution. If we placed a stretched out protein polymer in water, the surface tension; water-oil affect, will fold the protein to minimize exposure of its hydrophobic groups, so the hydrogen bonding of the 3-D water is maximized. If did the same for say ammonia or an alcohol, which also forms hydrogen bonds, since ammonia and alcohols are good degreasers; can dissolve organics, the protein will never fold into an active state. It will remain more in a chaotic state of flexible packing. This would be better modeled with statistical models.

Water reduces the randomness, due to its own needs, as evident by repeatable protein folding; optimize the energy landscape. One cannot replace the water, within earth life, with any other solvents to get the state called life. Nothing works properly, never mind integrate in 3-D via the 3-D water matrix. Life needs the entropic potential of the hydrogen protons of water. Organics help to harness this entropic potential, and vice versa. They work as team, with things more ordered and logical. Water leads evolution based on the simple principles of the 2nd law.

Oh .. while right up my ally .. having quite a stint in selling chemicals .. surfactants - degreasers .. and Water is my thing -- along with being microbiological specialist .. put em to work ... or kill them .. biocides ..corrosion inhibitors .. oil patch experience up the yang

So while talking my language .. "chemistry" .. in an area of considerable subject matter expertice .. you are talking more the mechanics of life .. rather than this "Life Energy" drumming order out of the chaos .. without doing work -- no apparent force being exerted .. that we know of

The chemistry you are driving at is related to abiogenesis .. the creation of primitive cell walls.. which allowed for selectivity across a membrane --in an aqueous system .. a crucial part of making amino- nucleic acids -- but also protecting them from degradation ... the order back into chaos. .. the next step then self replication -- and evolution takes care of the rest .. a stable organic system that keeps changing .. those changes however in a certain direction .. on a certain path .. towards creation of sentience .. knowledge of itself.

I think I came up with an easy to remember metaphor that helps describe my vision of entropy and how entropy is an extra drive connected to the living state, that puts everything over the top, for life and consciousness.

An Entropy Metaphor

Early this past summer, I bought a small portable ice maker, so I would not be opening the main freezer to get ice. That tended to defrost items on the freezer door. All ice makers are designed to lower the entropy of liquid water, so it changes into the solid state, we call ice. This occurs at the expense of electrical and mechanical energy, with the total system entropy, increasing. However, because ice was made, I end up with a little pile of lowered entropy state ice cubes, that exist below the average entropy of the ambiance conditions.

The ice maker makes ice, but it does not maintain the ice. Rather the ice needs to be used right away, or the ice will absorb ambiance heat, gain entropy, and then melt back to the liquid state, for recycle. Once made, the ice is not in a closed system, so entropy will absorb ambient heat and increase, via the second law, back to liquid. The ice maker will then recycle the melted water and make ice again. However, it can stay ahead and make ice faster than it melts.

Back when I lived in Florida, you could buy a redneck cooler that could keep your beer on ice cold for three days, in the Florida summer heat. Some ice will still be left over, even after day three. This cooler was closer to a closed system, where there is little outside heat transfer, so the solid zone of lowered entropy remains low, as ice. In an ideal cooler; closed system, the ice would never see any outside heat and would be preserved for a long time, since entropy needs to absorb heat to increase.

Besides beer, the redneck cooler was also be used to preserve food, that would be eaten later, after a hard day of noodling or gator watching. If you left the food out in the Florida sun, the potato salad would quickly spoil. The spoiling is a reflection of an entropy increase. Spoiling causes all those extra nasty bio-chemical processes to appear that make the food less than desirable to eat; more complex. However, if we place the food, with the ice, inside the cooler, the entropic state of the food, stays lower and the higher entqioic state called decay is delayed.

Entropy has a lot in common with time. Both increase to the future and neither cycle as waves or energy. Entropy is not energy or a wave. The ice pool, by maintaining lowered entropy; slowing the decay of the food, acts similar to the time dilation in relativity, maintaining a previous state, in time, for longer; the moving twin who does not age as fast. Entropy has a connection time potential.

Typically the food in the redneck cooler is used before it decays, since you plan well and get hungry. Grilling and smoking meat is popular down south. Often the burgers will be cooked in a portable grill. In this case, we will add excessive wood fire heat, to the lower entropy raw burger, forcing it into a stable state of higher entropy that is called cooked. This heat denatures the protein; unpacks their neat protein packing, making it easier to digest, allowing an easier metabolic increase in entropy via digestion.

The fire bumps the raw burger up into a higher stable state of entropy. This increased the chaos of the protein in the previous state, but it is now in a stable state all on its own, from which further increases in entropy, have been made easier. I can put the any left over cooked burgers in the cooler with the ice, and in this new state, it can now can outlast the fresh burgers; easier to stop in time. The discovery of cooking with fire was driven by the 2nd law, with the natural brain seeing the natural advantage of following the path of the second law.

Entropy is a state variable, meaning for any given state of matter, we will measure a given amount of entropy. Entropy increase will reflect the added chaos and complexity relative to a previous state, but like cooking meat, complexity can also become a new stable state of higher entropy; liquid and solid, that becomes like a platform, for even higher entropy states; evolution and learning potential. The brain is able to preserve and extrapolate memory which is composed of chemical states, while avoiding decay; oven to freezer.

In terms of my vision of entropy, relative to the classic concept of life energy/force and the traditional science concept of entropy, my vision is that entropy is more than just a measure of complexity and randomness. Entropy, by being a state variable, also has quantized states, that are like steps, from which even higher entropy can emerge to satisfy the 2nd law.

A simple example to see is within the metaphor of the ice and cooler. We are able to produce and store low entropy ice, even at ambient conditions, with higher expected/equilibrium entropy. If we had a glass of ice and we put it on the table at 25C, the ice will start to melt, so to can return to its proper equilibrium entropic state, However, the temperature of the ice and liquid water will not increase to above 0C until all the ice is melted. This lowered entropic state of ice has a state capacitance even when surrounded by higher entropy. This is not exactly random, but has a very specific value of 0C.

In terms of life, we can see this entropic state capacitance within evolution. We do not see a smooth transition between states; species, but rather we see steps between stable entropic states. These steps are like each state's version of ice/water, not able to change temperature until all is melted or all is frozen, even though heat is transferred to entropy at some other level. With humans, for example, we see all types of human variety; size, weight, color, temperament, etc., but not a new species, since the human state is like ice and although the water; all the variety of change, is appearing as entropy increases, this human state is stuck at its own version of 0C until all perturbations have been complete, then a new higher state can appear.

The randomness; variety, we see is one aspect of entropy, but it is not the whole story. There are also stable quantized entropic states that act like platforms for further entropy increase. The quarks, and then the proton, electron and neutron, and then the formation of the atoms, are examples of base states layering, which can then be built into even more complexity, allowing even higher entropy and higher stable entropic states, like the layers within life. These top layers, although not lasting as long, are also able to express entropy increase adding to the total.

Evolution works the same way, with entropy stepping upwards to higher and higher stable states, which each new higher entropic state becoming a platform for further perturbations and then change leading to the next step. Water is part of these stable states, since water was there from the beginning of life on earth and is still part of the base fluid states of life. Entropy, in terms of states is like memory that build upon itself since the drive is to always increase and build the next layer. Consciousness is part of the highest states.

I believe in life energy

It is measured in calories

How much life energy an item of food can give you is usually stated on the packaging

Energy or more specifically free energy has two attributes enthalpy and entropy. Calories are more connected to enthalpy which is a measure of internal energy, such as the calories within our food. Entropy is more about the movement toward randomness, complexity and higher levels of order. If life simply burned energy, but dd not change or evolve, enthalpy is all we would need. But change, growth, evolution depend on entropy, with the energy needed for the increase in entropy, provided by enthalpy.

Neurons and the brain burn lot of calories or enthalpy, pumping and exchanging potassium and sodium ions. This lowers ionic entropy setting the stage for the entropy to increase, which causes the neuron to fire. The firing and currents reflect the changes associated with entropy.

All our senses fire similar to neurons, based on various stimuli used to trigger the firing. Enthalpy sets the stage for this firing, while the firing itself, by triggering a cascade of affects within the brain, including long term storage of memory, is an expression of entropy. Both are needed for life, but control over entropy and structuring entropy is unique to life.

We live in space-time where the concepts of space and time are connected and work as a team. Velocity is distance/time. In this case space and time are connected by division and we get the phenomena we call velocity. Velocity has an upper limit in space-time connected to the speed of light. Einstein showed that space-time is not fixed, but rather it can bend, stretch and even curve space-time, as shown through his theories of relativity. Newtonian physics was more about a fixed matrix of space-time.

After many years of contemplation and theorizing origins; universe, life, consciousness, etc, I finally came to the conclusion that space-time could be taken one step further and this could connect all the pieces. Space-time can also break, allowing space and time, to act as two independent variables. This state brings some unique properties to the table some of which are connected to life as well as anomalies in physics.

If one could move in space independent of time, you could be everywhere at same instant. This state was classically called being omnipresent. This extrapolation of space-time breaking, into separated variable of space and time creates effects that parallel the ancient attributes of God. It appears the ancients also thought that space-time could break, and they created metaphors for some of the effects this could theoretically generate.

If we were in a realm where space and time were not connected, there would be endless possibilities. The two legged race of connected space-time sets limits on matter and energy that we call the laws of Physics. But if space and time were not connected and the tether of the three legged race broken, we would hav a state of endless possibilities. This would create a state of infinite complexity, without limits, and therefore be a place of maximum entropy. Since entropy needs energy to increase, a state of maximum entropy would have infinite but hidden; semi-off limits, energy

Separated space and time appears to be the drive behind the second law, as it acts within space-time. Our universe has a sense of direction, due to the second law; entropy has to increase back to its origins. This would also imply that there is an overlap of space-time and separated space and time, with the second law and entropy a way to lower the potential between these two dimensions or realms. Life and consciousness appears to tap into this extra set of variables with these connections classically called the life force and life energy.

Since there are no limits where space and time are not connected, this realm would be similar to our imagination in that anything goes, including what would not be allowed in space-time, such as imagining going faster than the speed of light. Space-time places practical snd physical limits, but the imagination has no such limits with respect to information and its organization.

In the special case of imagination, called innovation, what appears in the imagination of the innovator, may not yet be part of reality. It is not yet part of space-time, but it is still in the thought stage, more connected to separated space and time. Evolution, through entropy, which is connected to separated space and time, can extrapolate space and time as single variables to get optimized direction; vision of change and natural selection.
