tee hee, no slam to meArdent Listener said:Sorry, it was not meant as a slam towards Texans.:sorry1: I just thought "Home on the Range" was a little cute. A true Texan patriotic song would be more like "Remember the Alamo". I was always an Alamo fan as a kid.
The national anthem which just happened to have the same tune as "To Anacreon in Heaven", which just happened to be a drinking song.CaptainXeroid said:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_national_anthemsFrancis Scott Key wrote America's National Anthem in 1814, and it included this line "And this be our motto: 'In God is our trust'"
I do wish you had stopped here. I thought you actually understood the point of patriotic songs....then I read the rest of your post. I guess I just don't understand your bitterness and self-loathing.:ignore: No one is saying any nation is perfect, just that some of us have a more positive outlook on life that we choose to honor our heros.Jaiket said:Lets teach the kids about our fair and sweet heritage, our stark and defiant stance against adversity, our nation's unwillingness to bend to fear and hatred and on and on and on and on....
While that is an interesting song, it's not patriotic, so I would say it doesn't need to be taught in schools, and considering that more schools teach "The Spar Spangled Banner" than your drinking song, most educators seems to agree with me.Jensa said:...As long as we're all so stuck up on origins, I suppose we should teach that song to our kids as well!
We definately learn songs other than just patriotic ones in school.CaptainXeroid said:While that is an interesting song, it's not patriotic

Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord
He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored
He hath loosed the fateful lightning of His terrible swift sword
His truth is marching on
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! His truth is marching on
NZ's always getting left out... :cries:Jaiket said:I'm a UK national. Most of you are Americans. There are a couple of Aussies and a few others I am too ignorant to note (sorry Canada).
Patriotism creates seperatism among nations, which in terms of globally unification is a BAD THING!
