nachash = serpent comes from the root word and verb nachash; which is soothsaying, divining.
In her book, "Origin of Satan", Elaine Pagels describes satan as:
In biblical sources the Hebrew term the satan describes an adversarial role. It is not the name of a particular character. Although Hebrew storytellers as early as the sixth century B.C.E. occasionally introduced a supernatural character whom they called the satan, what they meant was any one of the angels sent by God for the specific purpose of blocking or obstructing human activity. [Elaine Pagels, "The Origin of Satan," 1995]
Jesus refers to himself as the Light of the world. This is also Lucifer's name.
He also makes another inference in that no one ascends to heaven; except the Son of Man who fell from heaven.
So are prophets, like Jesus, the adversaries of mankind's journey in to materialism?
this would make the serpent in the garden an adversary too; which would make it a prophet, or soothsayer, seer.
Ezekiel 21:15
So that hearts may melt with fear and the fallen be many, I have stationed the sword for slaughter at all their gates. Look! It is forged to strike like lightning, it is grasped for slaughter.
Luke 10:18
He replied, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven.
Psalm 29:7
The voice of the Lord strikes with flashes of lightning.
