Pope Francis dodges ring-kisses after Italian mass”

Pope Francis dodges ring-kisses after Italian mass

I don’t view the change as a bad thing, but curious to know why the change?

We were picnicking in a park in Naples many years ago. Two guys in tailored suits with suspicious bulges under an arm arrived, they took a look around then spoke into a hand radio. Next a wedding party arrived, bride and groom were photographed in front of the several statues while the party looked on. Then a limousine drove into the park. The two goons took position by a passenger door, the driver ran and opened the boot (trunk) to take an ornate curule chair and set it up by the most prominent statue. A goon opened the passenger door and an old gentleman got out, he was escorted to the curule chair by the goons, he sat, the goons took position each side, right hand in jacket close to the bulge. The wedding party, bride and groom first, lined up before him. In turn they approached him, knelt, took his hand and kissed his ring and walked away. Within moments of the last kiss the park was once again empty

Maybe the pope is trying to distance the church from a rather surreal mafia ritual?

I wonder who's tougher, the mafia or the hells angels? Either way, both have weird submissive traditions.

As a cradle Catholic, I never heard of the ring kissing until some protestant friends of mine told me about it in H.S.

...I think It's bazaar and completely unnecessary.

It is done as recognition of the significance of the position of the person sitting in the "Chair of Peter". However, Pope Francis is quite down to earth to the point whereas he really doesn't like being catered to personally.

He had a strong reputation as a bishop of working well with the poor and downtrodden in Buenos Aries, the experiences of which changed his life, moving him quite far away from his much more conservative Catholic upbringing.

Anyhow, let me put it this way: he's giving the conservative bishops massive migraines.

As with anything else there is probably more to the story, but Francis is not big on tradition and has broken with it (washing and kissing the foot of a Muslim on Holy Thursday) much to the shagrin of the conservatives.
Drats! Ya beat me to the punch!

I had heard that he is dodging the ring kissing in order to show humility, and equality with all other people.

If so, then Good on Francis! :)

You think he will give that ring to some poor people?

He might just pawn it so he can feed a small country or two for a year. :)Now that would be downright cool.

Cant argue that would be marketing a better image.

I guess the billion-dollar question would be, Does it go past the superficial, or does it just stop there?
