The killing of eight year-old Asifa Bano, details of which were released on Wednesday, and ongoing efforts by Hindu groups to disrupt the police investigation have sickened many Indians and deepened concerns about a growing sense of impunity among religious nationalists.

Asifa, a member of a nomadic Muslim tribe, was grazing horses on 10 January in Kathua, a district of Jammu and Kashmir state, when a farmhand lured her away. She was confined in a small Hindu temple, drugged, raped for five days by a group of men and killed with a rock.

Police allege the crime was intricately planned by Sanji Ram, the temple custodian, who they say agreed to pay local officers 500,000 rupees (£5,400) to create false evidence that would lead investigators away from him and his men.

Ram had been a staunch opponent of the settlement of the Muslim tribe, known as the Bakarwals, in the area, and saw Bano as a soft target in a plot to frighten the group into leaving, police said.
This is ugly xenophobia in the extreme.

Sectarian violence between Muslims and non-Muslims has, sadly, been going on in the Indian subcontinent for millennia. Both groups have been perpetrators and victims.

That is absolutely barbaric and these men should be jailed for life. It's bad enough that they rape and murder their victim but when that victim is a child?! That's atrocious beyond words!

Yes it is. Forced by the protests, the govt. has instituted death penalty for child rapists. But if the culprits are politically connected, I fear somebody innocent may get framed. I am watching the developments closely. If the new laws are implemented well, there would be some improvement. Otherwise the protests will intensify.

We can find episodes of horror committed by members of every group.

IMO, if we really want to make things better, we have to zoom out and look at larger trends. and not get caught up too much in specific episodes.

I think they and others like them regardless of their beliefs should die for it.

Throughout history, specific episodes catalyze movements which facilitate change. Still, whenever it comes to nativism and xenophobia, one can always count on some people to zoom out.

Your post is ambiguous, can you clarify it?

Rape is a crime against humanity, a horrific act, inhuman, and shouldn't be tolerated ... anywhere on this planet. Period. When will the real men please stand up and educate, criticise, and defend our women? Chicken-____s!

But to single out one particular country or ethnicity I don't think is wise. We're on this planet together. It happens everywhere, including in the privacy of homes. Doesn't matter. It's inhumane, abuse of power, and animalistic.

Real stats are hard to find I'm sure, because we can never know what percentage gets reported? Still, I present the following wiki article as evidence that it's way way too pervasive on our planet.

The tread title could be 'anti-________(insert race, religion or ethnicity here) rape violence in _________ (insert any country here)

It is true that in recent times religious intolerance has risen in India, mainly instigated by a group who claim to be upholders of Hinduism. Actually, IMO, their ideology have no commonality with Hinduism. They have grown because of continued misadventures of Pakistan, which fuels terrorism across border. You should remember the various heinous terrorist attacks and particularly the one on 26/11 in a Mumbai Hotel. Hatred is fuelled by hatred. There is no doubt that Pakistan openly fuels terrorism in Kashmir and tried the same in Punjab. Under such circumstance, secular people on both sides have been put on back foot.

It is the win of the conservatives and of parochialism all over the word. It is the win for those who live by selling armaments. I am sure we will see change soon.

OTOH, it is also true that, in recent times, there has been a many-fold increase of lust attacks on women and girls. But I do not think that the second issue has much to do with anti Muslim feeling. It has more to do with widespread availability of porn.

Wise words. I agree.

Am I paranoid or is there a pattern of religious conservativism and nationalist ideology allied in making things terrible across the world right now?

Sure. I understand, that the seed of violence and hatred was sown at the same time when oil was first discovered in West Asia.

It is also used as a tool of war, like chemical warfare, or 'terrorism'. I personally know only 5 rape victims. That's probably less than many people. I would know more but am not privy to it. Not something talked about much. Two are family members and the other 3 are war victims, from Sri Lanka. During the 1983 riots in Colombo, the 3 (mother, teenaged daughter, and 11 year old son) after being forced to watch their father hacked to death with axes, were all raped while the other 2 were forced to watch. The Sri Lankan army were mostly 'Buddhist'. But in that war, this sort of stuff went in all directions, as it did in many other wars.

Brutal, unthinkable, hidden, depressing, sad, disturbing, atrocious ... and more.

Sickening madness. And to think he runs the temple. My heart goes out to that poor girl and her family.

The larger trend is a increase in the targeting of minors in rape. Disturbing.
