I'm partial to men wearing black nail polish, or maybe another darker color. I don't like it so much when its lighter colors.

Actually, I've never worn that sort of thing, or make-up and what-not. However, I'm of an age when my nails split and splitter on an approximately 45-minute interval, and I'd love something that would harden them --- but that couldn't be seen as polish. I want a nail hardener with a matte finish like my nails themselves, but can't find anything like that.
